  3. Contents • Motivation • Back Ground • The Concept of PES Service • The position in Ubiquitous Service • The Network Architecture • Service Scenario • Comparison to similar technologies • Business Model • The Work to Do <author>, <company>

  4. Motivation • New mobile comm. service for the market • WPAN should be related with mobile comm. business. • Every services should be converged on the mobile phone. • Ubiquitous service is too broad and conceptual. • Aggregated & complemented with synergy effect • For Personal Environment Service • It could be leading & killer application of Ubiquitous services. • Step-by-step approach to mature Ubiquitous services.

  5. 1st Step : Human to Human Interaction Mainly voice communication. Contents are not important. 2nd Step : Human to Equipment Interaction Something like data retrieving, and contents are very important. (ARS, Wireless Internet, remote control) 3rd Step : Equipment to Equipment Interaction Electric machines connected to network are ubiquitous around human, and they provide convenience to human automatically, by interaction between machines. Ex: Ubiquitous/Sensor Network services, Context-Awareness applications The Progress of Communication Services

  6. 1st Step : Terminal Mobility Basic mobile communication services 2nd Step : Personal Mobility SIM(Subscriber Identification Module) services 3rd Step : Service Mobility VHE(Virtual Home Environment) services 4th Step : Environmental Mobility PES(Personal Environment Service) “The living environment follows when a person moves.” The Progress of Mobility Services

  7. The Evolution of Mobile Services Mobility (location dependent) environment service personal terminal USN IMT-2000 CDMA/GSM Analog Cellular human- human- equipment- human equipment equipment Communication Entities (USN : Ubiquitous Service Network)

  8. Intelligent configuration for convenient & comfort human living environment As a person moves to new position, the environment surrounding the one is supposed to be changed. Then the one should resign the one’s unique environment or should newly set it up, whenever the one moves. For energy saving Minimum operation of electric machine For security Using checkpoints, find the one’s moving track Necessity of PES

  9. As the mature stage of ubiquitous environment, it becomes possible to make surroundings to be realized electrically, and to control them by ones’ desire. PES services are based on “automatically construct personal environment by controlling surrounding electric machines, using pre-defined and self growing personal preference information, and service agent”. Overview of Personal Environment Service <Ref> J.T.Oh and Z.J.Haas, “Personal Environment Service for Mobile Users,” IEEE VTC Fall, Montreal, Canada, Sept. 2006.

  10. Service Concept Home & Public System Mobile Environment Internet Personal Environment Public Wireless Network Wireless Personal Area Network Personal Organizer Service Agent WPAN: ZigBee, UWB, BT

  11. Position to location dependent services Ubiquitous Services Ambient Aware Services PES Context Aware Services Location Based Services Location Aware Services

  12. Scope of PES Ubiquitous Service Network Wireless/wireline comm. network Electric/electronic machine Human Context- awareness Sensors Relationship to service entities

  13. Reference model of PES o o Sensor Node Bio-sensor Node Human contact WPAN Cellular Wire-line Option o Electric/Mechanical Equipment Personal Organizer o o o Wide Area Wireless Network Internet Home/Office /Public Computers Service Agent

  14. Included in ITU-R Recommendation ITU-R M.1822: Framework for services supported by IMT The definition of Personal environment service - The electric, electronic, and mechanical machine surrounding users can be automatically configured according to the pre-defined and/or self-growing user preference.

  15. automatic air conditioning: configuring temperature, humidity, air purity, and ventilation decoration control: kind of light and intensity, content of electric picture frame favorite group selection: TV channel, music, cooking method auto configuration of computer: power on/off, favorite web site addresses, Internet home page, login name, password, monitor theme, application program porting, user attributes for application program, volume control, e-mail configuration Service Scenario in a house

  16. Service Scenario in a house (continued) • mood control: calm mood, exciting mood, sleeping mood, cold mood - According to the environment profile, the set of environmental components such as temperature, light intensity, music selection and volume, communication function (like filtering incoming calls), the content of electric picture frame, food selection, and cooking method are configured properly. <JongtaekOh>, <Hansung Univ.>

  17. data transmission control home appliance health care health information acquisition service server Internet Internet Example at home

  18. data transmission Internet Internet data access electric frame data transmission service server Example in a hotel room

  19. private assistant: pulling conference material from user’s computer to the meeting place, personal gateway location identification: indoor location identification, automatic destination guide from the display at the entrance or corridor, elevator control, LBS automatic recognition: attendance check, entrance control Service Scenario in a office / building

  20. Internet Internet data transmission data access service server Example in a office

  21. automatic air conditioning: temperature, ventilation for each passenger automatic driving mode control: seat position, handle position, mirror angle, pedal sensitivity, maximum speed alarm favorite music or broadcasting station selection in-vehicle navigator configuration: menu configuration, favorite geography information, geography information update and Telematics services through the mobile phone and WPAN Service Scenario in a car

  22. mirror control data transmission side mirror control Telematics service seat position control driving wheel position control navigator attribute setting service server Internet Internet Example in a car

  23. travel and location information service: When user stands in front of the electric display guide, it shows the information about destination, geography, transportation, and shopping in user’s language automatic street lamp control Service Scenario in a city

  24. Extended Personal Environment Service • electronic payment: Mobile communication provider could participate in E-Commerce business, and provide personalized marketing considering time and location information of users, using mobile communications network. • customer management: It is effective from a selling area, like restaurant, store, theater, and etc. • personal gateway: Tiny portable equipment equipped with WAPN can be connected to Internet by through MP, then the mobile communication traffic increase greatly. <JongtaekOh>, <Hansung Univ.>

  25. PES in Public sector • Energy & CO2 saving: Light off in the place where no one shows, and optimal control for air conditioner, heater, T.V., PC, and etc • Safety service: Acquisition of information about people passing by a check point, like caretaker, bus stop, lobby, and etc., using WPAN equipped at the post, for checking pedestrians to protect from criminals, and provisioning of alarm information to them • Traffic information gathering: Gathering traffic information from the MPs of drivers and passengers and WPAN modules equipped at roadside <JongtaekOh>, <Hansung Univ.>
