  3. Here in the next slides are three running tips for people aged 50 and up shared by Donald Westra Jr. M.D.

  4. For runners in their 50’s and up who have been running since a young age, it is important to adjust goals and accept those adjustments. This can be difficult to admit but the older a person gets, the more muscle strength and aerobic capacity they lose. These goals should be used as motivational tools, which is easy to do once the adjustments have been accepted.

  5. It is important that runners aged 50 and older make sure that they are taking the proper amount of time between runs to allow their body’s to recover. The older a person gets, the longer it takes for them to bounce back from a long run. Recovery is healthy for the body and allows the body to build more muscle strengths because it is not exhausted.

  6. People in their 50’s who run regularly need to make sure that they are also finding time to do regular strength training as well. The benefits of strength training increase for runners as they get older because, as mentioned above, the older a person gets, the more muscle mass they lose. Strength training will maintain muscle mass and improve the health of joints, which can be stressed while running.
