It is all About the (Professional?) Future of Our Children Career's Week Martin Bernard March 2010
A simple (?) question: • “The evolutions of the world, their impacts on the labor market … and on our children´s education”.
AGENDA Introduction • Here and Now • A glance into the future: 20 years from now • Vocation and motivations Discussion and wrap-up
Why me tonight? • It all started with a book… • I will come back to it later • … and some major personal concerns … • Un(happiness) is a serious professional concern… • … as well as a society concern – costs are extremely high • Vocation (lack of) seem to play a key role • How to deal with my own children education? • How to bring some value to the school´s community?
Who am I? Personally … Professionally … • Executive Search • Sustainable development • Management consulting Leadership X sustainability
Initial perspective • Obviously we want the best for our children • And help them to be successful and happy in their future life • And we know that Life is not linear X
A (forgivable) bias • A huge majority (no statistics available…) of the school´s pupils graduates in Business Administration • Brazil, US, Europe (UK) • Although most of them aren´t necessary happy with that choice, but parents … or money … seem to decide for them
AGENDA Introduction • Here and Now • A glance into the future: 20 years from now • Vocation and motivations Discussion and wrap-up
Here and Now: Jan. 2010 • “Na hora de escolher a carreira, os estudantes brasileiros ainda ignoram as tendências e as futuras demandas do mercado de trabalho. (Too much) Waste all over the life cycle • “From Cradle to grave...” Exec. Search Childhood College (under)graduation Executive Non executive Retirement W W W W I ---- Age: 35 – 65 ---- I W Legend: Waste
The ES perspective: • Executive Search´s focus is on professionals aged 35+ • hence almost 20 years older than the children presenting the IB this year • Lessons learned (some) • Companies not only hire the brightest minds, but most of all the brightest … eyes attitude (really) matters • Purpose is key for success … and happiness < --> 70%+ of Brazilian executives are unhappy …

AGENDA Introduction • Here and Now • A glance into the future: 20 years from now • Vocation and motivations Discussion and wrap-up
An inexorable trend: • Competition is getting fiercer … and fiercer… • More than 20 years ago a fine undergraduate diploma was all you need • In the last 20 years MBAs and similar became critical for success • Today even tough the finest MBAs aren’t a guarantee anymore • … and tomorrow?

Sustainability and Happiness as major concerns (macro and micro) • There is more in well-being than just money • Gross National Happiness (GNH): Dr. Susan Andrews • A Nobel Price Perspective: Prof. Joseph E. STIGLITZ • “Report by the Commission on the Measurement of Economic Performance and Social Progress”, 2008 • Questioning the relevance of traditional measures of economic performance , i.e. GDP and the like, and their relevance as measures of social welfare
AGENDA Introduction • Here and Now • A glance into the future: 20 years from now • Vocation and motivations Discussion and wrap-up
A simple question hence: • In this context • How to guarantee success and happiness for our children in tomorrow world? • How to better leverage their talents?
A major assumption: • Doing what one really likes will become critical for success • Happiness and competitiveness go hand in hand; it´s just a question of energy balance • Unhappiness is just another kind of externality such as GHG emissions • Soon there will be no more room for waste • With age, correcting the professional path become more and more difficult
And remember: • At the end what matters is “Employability” “Empregabilidade é a capacidade que um individuo desenvolve ao acumular e manter atualizadas suas competências, seu conhecimento e sua rede de relacionamentos, de forma a ter, sempre, em suas mãos, o arbítrio sobre seu projeto de carreira”. Luiz Carlos Cabrera, 1988
Hence: • Education, both at home and at school, will have to pay greater attention to vocations • Learning to “be” instead of to “have” (diplomas, expertises, etc.) in order to avoid obsolescence of knowledge ; • Vocations shouldn´t be the privilege of a few but the right of all.
Coming back to “my” book:“The Path to Purpose – helping our children find their calling in life” WILLIAM DAMON • Professor of Education at Stanford University, Director of the Stanford Center on Adolescence; • Twenty-five-year research program on personal identity and moral commitment in human development; • Scientific treatment of how young people find fulfilling purposes in life; • Vision of how schools and parents can help young people find elevated goals to dedicate themselves to.
4 groups were identified* Significant impact in well being, i.e. happiness and health • Os que tem • projetos vitais • talent • self-realization • positive impact • on the world “Desengajados” “Superficiais” “Sonhadores” * Research, 2006; aprox. 400 participants
