  2. Geography Just over the border from Belgium and a hop across the Channel from England lies the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region. A region of contrasting landscapes: forests and woods, gentle meadows and marshlands, rolling hills dotted with windmills, a varied coastline that stretches for miles and miles, wide-open spaces of unspoilt countryside that make up the Regional Natural Parks, a network of waterways for river cruising, and much, much more...

  3. History Until the end of the 20th century "Nord" was also the name of the region, as well as that of the department. The region was once part of the Southern Netherlands, within the Low Countries and became totally French in 1713. The historical provinces now included in Nord-Pas de Calais are, mainly, Artois and Flanders (Flanders in French, in the singular), a designation which is still frequently used by the inhabitants.

  4. Industry The tourism industry flourishes in Nord-Pas-De-Calais as many people come from England and travel through it from other countries to go to Great Britain and other countries as it borders Belgium. The local economy used to be based on the pillars carbon, Steel, and Textile.

  6. Tourism • Tourism is huge in Nord-Pas-de Calais. Its where they get mot of there money. Here is a list of some of the things that the tourists love to see. • The Grande Place d’Arras: 155 residences designed in the Flemish style • - La Piscine, the museum of Art and Industry in Roubaix: a renovated former art-deco pool • - The Matisse museum at Cateau-Cambrésis: The third Matisse collection in France. • - The cupolaof Helfaut: An old underground bunker, constructed by the German Army during WWII, that was the site of the launch of V2 missiles. • - Deux Caps: a landscape on the Wild Coast at the border where La Manche meets the North Sea. • - The belfries of Belgium and of France, part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list. • - The palace of fine arts of Lille: France’s second-largest fine arts museum after the Louvre. • - The historic mining center museum at Lewarde • - Nausicaà, a national aquarium and scientific center in Boulogne-sur-Mer. • - The cathedral and the architecture in the town of Saint-Omer, its hotels, and its 18th-century facades. • - The Touquet-Paris Plage: 6 km of beach, 225 hectares of pine and birch forests.
