  8. Frame rates • Frame rates also known as (FPS) is the frequency of shots taken. There are different names for different frame rates used all around the world. These are: NTSC, PAL and SECAM. Here in the UK the frame rate used is PAL, the fps for PAL is 25. In places like America the frame rate used is NTSC, the fps for NTSC is 23.976. It is disputed which fps is the right frame rate to use. In my opinion, I believe that with NTSC the pixels are very distorted and aren’t as clear as the frame rate used for PAL. SECAM is also 25 fps and an example of where SECAM is used are the Eastern European countries. Most films are recorded at 24fps but it can vary on the director. For example the hobbit broke the rule and recorded the film at 48fps. This is double the normal frame rate used in films and could be a huge risk! Personally I think that the higher the frame rate, the more clearer the footage is and the more smoothly it runs. Frame rate will always be disputed within the media industry and everyone will always have different standards.

  9. Aspect ratio (screen ratio) • Aspect ratio is the height and width of the footage shown on a television screen. It describes the relationship between the height and the width of the image. Normally it is shown as 2 numbers with a colon in between a bit like ratio in mathematics. An example of an aspect ratio is: 15:7. Today, there are certain aspect ratios which are widely used and are popular. In the cinema the aspect ratio is usually 1.85:1 and 2.39:1. The photography ratio is: 4:3 or 3:2. So as you can see the aspect ratio varies on what equipment you are using and what you are filming or capturing.

  10. Resolution The resolution is how many pixels is shown. In other words, how clear the image is and is the image in high definition? The higher the resolution the clearer the image and the more smoothly the recording will run. Normally it is shown as width x height for example; “1020 x 760”. This shows that it is 1020 pixels and the height is 760. The resolution for a standard definition television in the UK: 720 x 576. High definition television: 1280 x 720. A normal cinema screen: 2048 x 1080. So as you can see, the bigger the screen the higher the resolution which means the quality is clearer and it runs a lot more smoothly. Computers however have a higher resolution than televisions, the current most common resolution for a computer screen is 1024 x 768. However, today you can probably get computer screens with a higher resolution with the way that technology has progressed over the years. An example of this is apple, the macbook pro resolution is 2880 x 1800 which is a very high resolution. As time is going on, resolution is becoming higher and higher which means the quality is increasing.

  11. Compression After filming your footage you have to do something called ‘compression’. You use a digital device to film your footage and then you have to transfer it to an analogue device. This means that the file size will be very big on the analogue device. This needs to be compressed in order for you to be able to upload it or present it to other people. On the analogue device the footage that you have filmed could be up to 18mb which is way too big. So this needs to be made smaller which is why you use compression, to make the file smaller and able to edit. The footage being that big makes it impossible for you to edit it so it needs to be compressed no matter what.

  12. Video format Video format is a type of recording or broadcasting using moving images. There are loads of different types of video formats that you can use. These include: MP4, MOV and MP3. The different types of video format depending on what you’re doing with the footage. Say for example you’re uploading the footage to youtube, the footage needs to be in a certain format for you to be able to upload the video in a good quality. Different formats mean different qualities, different uses of the footage and how the video runs.
