The Kite is the earliest flying object in the history of man Originated in China over 2000 years ago Supposedly created by Lu Ban, a great building master Starting in the Han Dynasty, kites were used for measurement and sending messages  In the Tang Dynasty, the kite was introduced to neighboring countries like Korea and Japan During the Song Dynasty, kite flying was gradually introduced to the public in the form of entertainment During the Yuan Dynasty, kites were introduced to several European Countries The History of Kites in China

  3. The first step is to create a frame using, thin, light bamboo strips After the frame is complete, paper or silk is stretched tight across the frame and then pasted to the frame Finally, a long thread is attached to the kite How to Make a traditional kite

  4. The Two Types of Kites • Hard Wing Kites • Can stand greater wind pressure • Can achieve greater altitudes than soft wing counterparts • Soft Wing Kites • Much lighter than hard Wing kites • Can achieve greater speed and distance than hard wing counterparts

  5. Kite Style • Kites can be formed into many different shapes based on construction of frame: • Traditional birds • Fish • Beasts • Worms • Human figures

Kite flying is less popular in modern China Kites can still be seen in the park, at the beach, the city square or street side You can still find kite clubs and shops in any major Chinese city Beijing is one of the best known hotspots for kite flying in the entire world In 1989, the International Kite Federation was officially established The IKF’s headquarters are located in Weifang of Shandong Province, holds the annual World Kite Championship Kite Flying in Modern China
