  6. LUBRICANT DEVELOPMENT FOR MARINE ENGINE LUBRICANTS THERE ARE NO SPECIFICATIONS OR STANDARD TESTS EACH ENGINE BUILDER INTRODUCES ITS OWN REQUIREMENTS AND REQUIRES FULL SCALE SHIP TRIALS

  7. LUBRICANT DEVELOPMENT by KNOWING FUTURE EVOLUTION of ENGINES and FUELS, it is NECESSARY to FORESEE FUTURE CONSTRAINTS on LUBRICANT in ORDER to be READY to PRESENT the RIGHT LUBRICANT at the RIGHT TIME

  8. NON OBJECTION LETTER LUBRICANT DEVELOPMENT Choice of a formulation LABORATORY ENGINE BENCH TESTS TESTS APPROVAL FIELD TESTS

  10. PROPERTIES OF A MARINE LUBRICANT • DETERGENCY : TO KEEP CLEAN THE HOT PARTS • DISPERSANCY : TO KEEP CLEAN THE COLD PARTS • THERMAL STABILITY : TO RESIST TO TEMPERATURE • ANTI OXYDATION : TO RESIST TO OXYGEN ACTION • ANTI SCUFFING : TO KEEP OIL FILM EXISTENCE • ALKALINITY RESERVE : TO DESTROY ACIDITY • ANTI CORROSION : TO AVOID CORROSION • WATER TOLERANCE : TO RESIST TO WATER ACTION • DEMULSIBILITY : TO EASILY REMOVE WATER • CENTRIFUGEABILITY : TO EASILY REMOVE CONTAMINANTS • FILTRABILITY : TO AVOID CLOGGING • ANTI FOAM : TO AVOID FOAMING • COMPATIBILITY : TO HAVE FLEXIBILITY in SERVICE

  12. to SEPARATE • ALL THE MOVING PARTS • to COOL • CRANKSHAFT, PISTONS, LINERS..... • to PREVENT FORMATION • DEPOSITS , SLUDGE, LACQUERS, VARNISHES... • to CARRY AWAY • INSOLUBLE PRODUCTS • to ENSURE GAS SEALING between rings and liners • to PREVENT RINGS STICKING • to GUARANTY the EXISTENCE of an OIL FILM • to MINIMIZE WEAR and to PREVENT SCUFFING • to ENSURE LUBRICATION of BEARINGS

  13. to MINIMIZE WEAR (RINGS and LINERS) to CONTROL DEPOSITS (SLUDGE and LACQUER) to PREVENT RINGS STICKING LINERS and SKIRTS SCUFFING to LUBRICATE AND TO COOL PISTONS, LINERS.....

  14. to COOL • PISTON UNDERCROWN • to ENSURE LUBRICATION • CROSSHEAD BEARINGS • CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS • MAIN BEARINGS • to PREVENT CORROSION • to CARRY AWAY • CONTAMINANTS (Water, …. )

  18. Generic Terms

  19. BUNKERS - fuel consumed by the engines of a ship; Compartments or tanks in a ship for fuel storage. • BARGE - flat-bottomed boat designed to carry cargo on inland waterways, usually without engines or crew accommodations. Barges can be lashed together and either pushed or pulled by tugs, carrying cargo of 60,000 tons or more.

  20. NAUTICAL MILE - distance of one minute of longitude at the equator, approximately 6,076.115 feet. The metric equivalent is 1852 meters. • KNOT - unit of speed in navigation which is the rate of nautical mile (6,080 feet or 1,852 meters) per hour. • HULL - shell or body of a ship.

  21. QUAY - A structure attached to land to which a vessel is moored. • ABAFT - A point beyond the midpoint of a ships length, towards the rear or stern. • AFT - in, near, or toward the stern of the vessel.

  22. ASTERN - A backward direction in the line of a vessel's fore and aft line; Behind. If a vessel moves backwards it is said to move astern; Opposite to ahead. • AT SEA - in marine insurance this phrase applies to a ship which is free from its moorings and ready to sail.

  23. BEAM - the width of a ship. Also called breadth. • BOW - the front of a vessel. • BRIDGE - used loosely to refer to the navigating section of the vessel where the wheel house and chart room are located; Erected structure amidships or aft or very rarely fore over the main deck of a ship to accommodate the wheelhouse.

  24. DANGEROUS CARGO - all substances of an inflammable nature which are liable to spontaneous combustion either in themselves or when stowed adjacent to other substances and, when mixed with air, are liable to generate explosive gases or produce suffocation or poisoning or tainting of foodstuffs.

  25. Bunkering Bunker: A Container for Fuel : To Put Fuel into the Bunker

  26. TYPE OF FUEL USED FOR MAINMACHINARIES ON BOARD A VESSEL. • MAIN ENGINE:- FO, DO. • GENERATORS (AUX. ENGINES):- DO, FO. • AUXILIARY BOILER :- DO, FO. • EMERGENCY GENERATOR / LIFE BOAT ENGINES / EMERGENCY FIRE PUMP ENGINES / EMERGENCY AIR COMPRESSOR ENGINE:- GO / DO. • When sensitive cargoes are being carried and IG generators are fitted they also use gas oil

  27. BUNKER GRADES • F.O. Grades:180 CST(RME-25) 380 CST(RMG-35) • D.O. Grades: MGO(DMA) LDO(DMC) MDO(DMB)

  28. FO – SPEC. AS PER ISO 8217:1996 (E)

  29. DO – SPEC. AS PER ISO 8217:1996 (E)

  30. Types of Ships

  31. BULK CARRIER - ship specifically designed to transport vast amounts of cargoes such as sugar, grain, wine, ore, chemicals, etc.

  32. Bulk Carrier

  33. DRY CARGO SHIP - Vessel which carriers all merchandise, excluding liquid in bulk.
