  2. For Starters: Do you know anyone who has been kidnapped? How safe did you feel as a child playing in your neighborhood?

  3. Literary Focus: Historical Narrative In narrative writing, an author recounts a series of events, often in chronological order. A historical narrative is an account of a significant event in history. In his account of the journey from Africa to Barbados aboard a slave ship, Equiano details the astonishment, horror, and helplessness of those who were captured.

  4. Equiano’s account of the horrors he suffered struck a chord with northern abolitionists in the United States who joined too fight against slavery. His narrative is considered one of the first great black autobiographies.

  5. Equiano’s narrative argues eloquently against the slave trade. It is both autobiographical and persuasive and appeals to both logos and pathos.

  6. Vocabulary copious (KOH pee uhs) adj.: more than enough; plentiful. Fish were copious in the ocean waters. avarice (AV uhr ihs) n.: greed; desire for wealth. The avarice of the slave traders caused the cruel exploitation of many people. render (REHN duhr) v.: cause to become; make. His fear will render him helpless. procured (pruh KYURD) v.: brought about; caused. Some slaves procured their own freedom by saving enough money to purchase themselves. nominal (NAHM uh nuhl) adj.: existing in name only; not real. Some slaves called the slave traders “nominal Christians” because the traders acted in a way that was inconsistent with the teachings of their religion.

  7. Reading Focus: Making Inferences About an Author’s Beliefs An inference is an educated guess based on what you already know and what you learn from reading a text. To make an inference while reading, look beyond what the author states directly and think about what is hinted, or implied. As you read Equiano’s account, stay alert for passages that help you infer his beliefs about human nature and what he expects from
