Program History • Chief Gellatly introduces “Community Oriented Policing” concept in 1991. • Citizens Police Academy (CPA) established in 1991. • Volunteers in Policing(VIP) program becomes an extension of the CPA program. • First CPA class graduates in March, 1992. • First VIP starts working within Savannah Police Department in June 1992.

  3. Citizens Police Academy • Current Program • Two 13-week sessions annually • Covers everything from department history to tactical training to a patrol ride-along • Pre-requisite for VIP program • VIPs required to re-take course every three years

  4. Volunteers in Policing Mission The mission of the VIP program is to motivate the citizens of the Savannah-Chatham area to become involved with SCMPD and share in the responsibility of policing their community.
