  2. Definition • In order to understand pronoun-antecedent agreement, you need to know the following: • What is a pronoun? • What is a antecedent? • What is a pronoun-antecedent agreement error ?

What is a pronoun? • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun or other pronoun. • It can take the place of a subject word. • I, you, he, she, it, we, they • It can take the place of an object word. • Me, you him, her it, us, them • It can take the place of a possessive word. • My, mine, your, yours, his, hers, its, our, ours, their, theirs

What is an antecedent? • The word that the pronoun replaces. • Hermione dropped herbook onto the floor • “her” renames “Hermione” • When Jason saw the book fall, he picked it up and handed it to her. • “it” renames the “book” • Then Jason and Hermione went to theirEnglish class. • “their” renames “Ron and Hermione”

  5. What is a pronoun-antecedent agreement ? • All pronouns and their antecedents need to agree in person and number.

  6. Agree in Person • Ihate to proofread my paper because proofreading is such a boring thing for you to do. • The disagreement in person is that "I” is a first person antecedent , and “you” is a second person pronouns.

  7. Agree in Numbers • Singular antecedents get singular pronouns • The boy tossed his hat on the table. • Plural antecedents get plural pronouns • The boys tossed their hats on the table

  8. Example One Incorrect Sentence: Why should I go to the store if you aren’t going to get anything you want? Solution: This sentence contains a disagreement on the basis of viewpoint. The antecedent, I, is in the first person point of view. The pronoun it refers to, you, is in the second person point of view. Correct Sentence: Why should I go to the store if I am not going to get anything I want? Or.. Why should you go to the store if you aren’t going to get anything you want?

  9. Example Two Incorrect sentence: I told everyone to bring their coats since the temperature is falling. Solution: Correct the error either by making the antecedent plural or by specifying both genders: Correct sentence: I told all my friends to bring their coats since the temperature is falling.

  10. Example Three Incorrect Sentence: The audiences showed its approval of the performance by giving an outstanding round of applause. Solution: The pronoun and antecedent do not agree in number: Audiences is a plural antecedent and its is a singular pronoun. Correct Sentence: The audience showed its approval of the performance by giving an outstanding round of applause. Or..The audiences showed their approval of the performance by giving an outstanding round of applause.
