What happened? • The two armies met July 1, 1863 • Union cavalry surprised Confederate infantry • Outnumbered, the Union retreated • July 2, 1863: The Confederates launched another assault, yet Union was able to save their position • July 3, 1863: Union was led by General Pickett. Why did it occur? • General Lee began to move north in June with an army of 75,000. • Lee figured another victory on Northern soil would convince Britain and France to aid Confederacy. • Lincoln appointed General Meade to find and fight Lee’s forces and protect Washington and Baltimore from Confederate attack.

  8. Outcome of the battle? • Confederates were defeated and retreated back to Virginia. • On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln held a ceremony dedicating a cemetery at Gettysburg. He expressed through a speech what the war had come to mean. http://www.nps.gov/archive/gett/gncem.htm
