1. Nurses or Collaborators? - Challenged Role of Private Home Care Nurses in Assisting Paralyzed Patients

2. A person’s welfare is mostly in his hands, partly in doctor’s hands and substantially in nurse’s hands. It is because of the significant role of the nurses that they have become an important part of health care industry. However, with the passage of time, their duties have multiplied and they don’t only provide nursing care to patients but work in close liaison with doctors and therapists, particularly when a patient is suffering from paralysis. In short, while dealing with paralyzed patients nurses have to play bigger and diverse roles.

3. Treating Paralysis - Nurses as Caregivers • Paralysis is quite common among adults. While it usually occurs because of stroke, spinal cord injuries are also a major cause. Similarly, paralysis is of different types. It could be ‘Paraplegia,’ which usually affects legs, or ‘Quadriplegia,’ which paralyzes legs as well as arms. Another type of paralysis is ‘Hemiplegia’ which impairs and affects one side of the body. No matter what type of paralysis a patient has, role of nurses is crucial in improving their health.

4. Nurses are considered to be caregivers. It is the most important role of nurses as they have to be attentive and assist patients continuously in private home care. As caregivers a nurse should perform following duties:

5. Patient’s Assistance • Private home care nurses are required to help the paralyzed patients with their daily life activities like helping them to take bath, have food, get dressed, etc.

6. Health Evaluation • Paralyzed patients recover slowly, but evaluation of their health every day is a nurse’s primary role. It is important that nurses assess their health daily and keep record of their health related issues.

7. Psychological Support • Where physical support is essential, paralyzed patients need psychological assistance as well.The feeling that they have physical impairment and slow progress discourages them and lowers their morale. At this stage, nurses need to encourage them and their families, and motivate them to be optimistic.

8. Nurses as Collaborators • Paralyzed patients actually require various treatments since paralysis affects several functions of their body. A patient needs rehabilitation, speech therapy, and occupational therapy as well. Nurses, thus, act as a communicator, reporter and team player while dealing with paralyzed patients.

9. All these therapists play a specific role in restoring the health of an individual and, therefore, nurses need to coordinate and communicate with them regularly for quick and improved outcomes, but can nurses perform this challenging role?

Although performing multiple roles is difficult, but since mutual aim of every player in the health care industry is same i.e. health and wellness of patients, nurses can make significant contributions. However, it is important that private home care nurses are qualified, well trained and experienced and are able to achieve enhanced health outcomes.
