  1. Piraeus of Apollo By Jack Johnson

  2. Few Facts about Piraeus of Apollo Discovery • Sculpted in 530-520 BC 50-40 years before the end of the Archaic period in 480BC • Discovered in 1959 in Piraeus West of Athens. • Was a rescue excavation 1.5M under the surface. Discovered with other artefacts and statues (A statue of Athena a large and a small Diana a mask a shield made from bronze, also a marble statue of Artemis and two hermaicstelae.)

  3. A little about the statue • Similar to a Kouros statue but a few differences • Face has hints of a Kouros face with alterations to it. • Arms are raised this was because it was made from bronze and the martial wouldn’t fracture under its own weight. • Has a pubic area attached not painted. • Typical stance of a Kouros but the right foot is forward when it tended to be the left foot forward.

  4. Outstretched Hands • The right hand of Apollo is thought to have held a golden libation bowl • In his left hand it is believed he is holding a bow.

  5. Face of the Sculpture. • Eyes more life like but still larger than life size eyes which fits the kouros image. • Archaic/Kouros Smile • Hair related to the god Apollo which is supported by other sculptures and paintings. • Telephone ears still. • Added detail such as nipples. Replica of the Piraeus of Apollo face

  6. Condition it was found in • Lost what is to be believed as a golden libation bowl in Apollo's right hand. • And a bow in his left hand. • There is also a large crack down the left thigh which was probably caused when buried with the other statues and artefacts.

  7. Casting of the Sculpture • Woodford says that it was a new way of sculpting and the sculptor of the Piraeus Apollo followed the same guide line of a Kouros but experimenting with the new material he had to work with.

  8. From the side you can also see how the muscles are much more defined in the Piraeus of Apollo rather than in earlier Kouros statues this is due to Bronze casting but also the study of the human body more realising the proportions of a male body Body style • The moulding of the muscles shows more detail of the human body this could bee achieved easier with the use of Bronze casting

  9. What did Woodford say...? • The technique of bronze casting had been more accomplished and used to create such sculptures as the Piraeus Apollo (Pg 77) • “it is clear the artist has begun to exploite the new freedom that the material allowed him: the arms are separated from the body and extended unsupported in a position that would not have been possible in marble” (Pg 77) • “The left hand held a bow and the right, another attribute to identify the god.” (Pg 77)This shows that there is some dispute about what the Piraeus Apollo was holding in his right hand.
