  1. Finding The Best Scope Mount Systems For Your Firearm What is a scope mount or scope mount system and when is it used, and by who? The scope mount, that normally consists of a base and scope rings, is used to attach a telescopic sight or other sight to the rifle or other firearm that one uses when hunting or shooting. The scope sight that you use will depend on one of two options. i.e. the scope that needs rings to be mounted, whereas the other option will use a rail mount. It often depends on personal choice, and also on whether you buy your firearm with a rail already as part of the rifle, in which case you will only need rings to complete the process of mounting your sight. Many rifles require the scope rings and base as part of the mounting process. This type normally consists of a base part which is attached directly to the firearm itself, accompanied by two rings which attach the sight. This process, i.e. taking care of attaching your scope mount to the rifle and scope yourself, is often the choice of the hunter or shooter that prefers to do this themselves, and to not ask a gunsmith to do it – or to buy a firearm with the scope already attached. There are reasons for this, such as the levels of accuracy and precision that many hunters and shooters insist upon. They know that once they have taken care of the process themselves, they will be able to rely on such precision when they shoot. Of course, to have this confidence in a system that you mount on your own, requires the confidence that you have bought your rings and base from a trusted, experienced supplier with a great reputation for marketing quality rings and bases, a company known for taking care that they use only high-quality materials and manufacturing processes that will support a product that is considered strong, durable and offering the fit you need to mount a scope that will aid the precision you are aiming for. Rings and bases are normally made of steel or aluminum, the latter being the choice of most firearm owners that take care of the process of mounting themselves. They come in different sizes with diameters such as those of 25.4 mm (1 inch), 30 mm and 34 mm being the most popular choices. You will choose the size that corresponds with the sight you attach. Leading manufacturers all offer their own products, with the best among these known for the quality products they offer, and the DIY instructions they offer the customer/client that takes care of the mounting process on their own. That is why certain companies will always be more popular than others even if they purport to offer the same quality rings and bases. The good ones offer experience and years in their industry, and they have developed a product that can be trusted for the accuracy and precision they are known to help offer the shooter that mounts a base and rings on their rifle. The base is that part that interconnects between your scope and rifle. In some cases the base is already on the rifle as a picatinny rail, for example, while in other cases the base is a separate accessory that must be attached, just like the rings are for the sight to attach to. Where you need to attach a base, it is good to know that these bases (and the rings) are normally made to suit a specific firearm or range of firearms, and not necessarily every firearm out there. This information you get from the service provider you are buying your base and rings from. When you order your base and rings from the manufacturer/supplier, you will also receive the tiny screws with which you complete the attachment. Firearm enthusiasts that prefer to mount their scopes on their own, have choices of where they can buy their bases and rings. The good suppliers will always stand out above the competition for the quality of the scope mounts, bases and rings they design and market to the public.
