  1. Article - Dmidrilling.com Drilling Companies Make Projects Solid from the Ground Up When construction plans call for a giant structure to sit atop the earth, the real start of construction work typically begins deep within the ground. This ensures stability and security down the road by ensuring a proper foundation is laid for what will be visible above ground. From bridges to very large buildings and installations, drilling companies are the experts required to help get this job done right. The type of work a drilling company will need to do to ensure safety while a project is under way or stability once it is complete depends on the particular intent of the project. Temporary excavations, for example, may only require soil nails to ensure earthen walls don’t cave in as work is commencing. This type of construction involves shoring up an excavation, such as one that might be used in mining work or even in the creation of a basement. If construction plans call for placing a large structure above ground, a drilled shaft design might be called for. This type of construction involves creating very strong supporting structures that are meant to help ensure stability and prevent ground settling once construction is complete. A drilled shaft, also known as a caisson, is built when the first line of support for a structure must come from within the ground rather than a standard foundation. A drilled shaft is created by drilling deep into the earth using an auger. Casing or drilling fluid might be used to help keep the hole open while the shaft is being completed. Once a hole is created and shored up, drilling companies reinforce the shaft with a cylindrical piece of steel. Once the steel is in place, the hole is filled with concrete. The end result is an in ground support beam basically. This beam protects construction from compression, uplift and lateral loads. Drilled shafts are commonly used by drilling companies to provide foundational support for towers, bridges and some buildings, especially tall, heavy structures. Creating a foundation that is solid and likely to resist settling and erosion is especially critical when large structures are intended. This is why drilling companies are often among the first contractors on the scene when a large project is being undertaken. After all, stability is a must if a large structure is intended to pass the test of time. It is also an absolute must for safety. Once drilled shafts are in place, the more visible work associated with a large construction project can move forward. About the Company DMI Drilling has been the drilling company contactors throughout Washington State turn to for drilled shaft designs, soil nails and other excavation work since 1991. The company prides itself in delivering the expertise required to provide safety in a wide variety of construction settings.
