  2. SUMMARY In this documentary. We have disclosed a serious human rights violation, we have published information regarded as secret which refers to initial rites and which some people are aware of and they are afraid to talk about because they fear that something very serious may happen to them. We have broken the taboo of confronting people who lead the initial rites which may even lead to their death.   3. SUMMARY (2) In Mozambique, the judges are not allowed to talk publicly about ongoing lawsuits under their responsibility. And we have been able to make them talk. We have proved that since the arise of the idea to investigate sexual violation cases of women during the initial rites, search for funding and we have even been able to talk to people who are traditionally not allowed to talk about these issues. We feel that we are going to contribute for a society that makes a critical reflection on bad cultural practices and we can also contribute for the establishment and compliance of laws against violence and which promote gender equality 50/50 ATÉ 2015: EXIGINDO UMA AGENDA POS 2015 FORTE

  5. CONTEXT Initial rites are a very important cultural component in the process towards the definition of the identity of some communities in Mozambique. It is during this process that values are transmitted defining how boys and girls will behave in future, not only from a social perspective, but also in terms of their sexuality. However, this process embodies dangerous elements to the lives of women and they violate their human rights. This also happens to the boys. Therefore, the documentary “Initial Rites – The Dark Side” that we have produced, clearly portraits the drama in which women live in relation to sexual collective and systematic violations that they suffer in the name of culture during the male initial rites in the north of Mozambique and 50/50 ATÉ 2015: EXIGINDO UMA AGENDA POS 2015 FORTE

CONTEXT (2) the enormous injustice practices they suffer from their partners, the community, justice institutions, among others in order to call the attention of the whole society in general as well as from the relevant entities to end this evil. In this documentary has triggered strong emotions from viewers, especially when the victims talk first hand about their experiences and the pain they suffer until today. Apart from the victims, the documentary brings remarks from the community leadership, the local government, initial rites’ masters, young people who went through initial rites, religious leaders, members of the civil society, health personnel, police officers and court staff members who are in possession of cases of violation and they all talk first hand.

  7. TARGET – AUDIENCE Create awareness on the need to eliminate all cultural practices that violate women’s, men’s and children’s human rights in the north of Mozambique. First – Decision makers Second – The society in general, with focus on boys and men aged between 15 and 49 years, resident in the north of Mozambique. The documentary brings the negative aspects of these practices through statements from women and men who were victims first hand. PROCESS/ METHODOLOGY We conducted: Individual interviews with women victims, other women living in the three provinces of Northern Mozambique and young adult, young men and adults, community & religious leaders, provincial and district governments officers (health, Women and Social Action , police, court) and with families of victims Public discussions with men and women, civil society, government (Police, Women and Social Action , police and students in secondary schools) Focus Groupswith men, women and youth separately These sources were chosen because they are directly linked to the problem in allusion, they know the existence of these practices, some of them have been subjected to them. Therefore, their opinion is relevant for a better understanding of the phenomenon which will facilitate advocacy work for their elimination 50/50 ATÉ 2015: EXIGINDO UMA AGENDA POS 2015 FORTE

Outcome • - Many people (men and women) including some intellectuals, politicians, did not know of the existence of such practices and they demonstrated a sense of outrage and indignation when saw the documentary and they recommend that it take action urgent to stop this evil. • The Television of Mozambique, repeated 8 (eight)times the documentary for the relevance of the subject between December 2013 and February 2014. • NGOs such as WLSA (Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Education Trust), UNFPA and other organizations use the documentary in training sessions 50/50 ATÉ 2015: EXIGINDO UMA AGENDA POS 2015 FORTE

NEXT STEPS - We'll take the documentary through the Ministry of Women and Social Action, to the Council of Ministers to discuss them on the subject, as a form of persuasion for measures to be taken; - We will show the documentary at the community level with the presence of community members (men and women), community leaders, government official, civil society and other stakeholders in the three northern provinces of Mozambique where this practice prevails and we’ll promote more debates about it; - We will show the documentary and promoting discussions at national level (in government institutions, schools, universities, churches, NGOs and among other places. 50/50 ATÉ 2015: EXIGINDO UMA AGENDA POS 2015 FORTE
