Challenges in Sex Education for Children with Disabilities in Lithuania

Sex education in Lithuania continues to be a taboo subject, especially when it comes to addressing the sexual needs of children with disabilities. Despite progress post-Soviet era, there is still a stigma surrounding the sexual maturation of individuals with disabilities. The lack of practical advice and education for parents and caregivers contributes to this issue, with authorities and experts often avoiding the topic. As the number of families with children with disabilities is expected to increase, there is a pressing need for better support and understanding in addressing the sexuality of this demographic.

  3. SEX EDUCATION IN LITHUANIA In Lithuania, Sex Education was taboo for long time. There was no sex in the Soviet Lithuania – or so people liked to joke in that time.

  4. Now almost three decades free of Soviet structures –and more than 60 years after the West’s sexual revolution – Lithuania is still grappling with this legacy as it struggles to teach young people about the birds and the bees in an education system.

  5. The sexual maturation of people with disabilities is still a stigma in our society. Children with severe intellectual disabilities are helpless against the ,,awaking bear’’ and their parents do not receive practical advice on how to act during puberty. The authorities responsible for the sexual education of children are even reluctant to answer media questions. Experts are ruthless -we are a moralist state, closing in on awkward questions.

  6. The head of the Lithuanian Association for the Care of the Mentally Disabled, agrees that sexual needs of the disabled are ignored at all. She argues repeatedly with the view that people with disabilities have no need for sex at all. A rare person who thinks about having children, having sex is one of the basic physiological needs of a person, whether eating or drinking.

  7. Currently there are about 499860 children under 17 yearsliving in Lithuania. According to global autism statistics, 8500 of them should have autism spectrum disorder. There are currently over 2,000 families with children with multiple developmental disabilities. Within the next 5-10 years, there will be at least 10,000 such families. Correspondingly, it will comprise 30-50 thousand family members (parents, siblings, other close relatives) of autistic children. *ŽebrauskasA., Autism Threatening Statistics: Is Lithuania Ready?
