  1. TEXTURE OF ROCK.. THE SIZE, SHAPE AND POSITIONS OF THE PIECES INSIDE A ROCK.. 3 TYPES= FINE GRAINED, COARSE GRAINED AND MEDIUM GRAINED ROCKS ARE MADE OF MINERALS, BUT MINERALS ARE NOT MADE OF ROCKS.

  2. FINE GRAINED TEXTURE • WE DON’T EASILY SEE WHAT IS INSIDE THE ROCK.. • COOLS FAST, CRYSTALS DON’T LAST • EXAMPLE=TOMATO SOUP

  3. MEDIUM GRAINED TEXTURE • WE SEE SOME OF THE PIECES INSIDE THE ROCK BUT NOT ALL OF THEM • MEDIUM=CRYSTALS SOME • EXAMPLE=OREO COOKIE

  4. COARSE GRAINED TEXTURE • WE CAN EASILY SEE THE PIECES INSIDE THE ROCK • COOLS SLOW=CRYSTALS SURE CAN GROW • EXAMPLE=A SALAD OR “THE WORKS” PIZZA

  5. A ROCK’S COMPOSITION • THE PERCENTAGE OF THE MINERALS THAT MAKE UP A ROCK.. • EXAMPLE= GRANITE IS MADE UP OF.. • 10% MICA • 55% FELDSPAR • 35% QUARTZ

  6. COME IN SILENTLY AND… • READ OVER TODAY’S SONG VERSES AND CHORUS.. • UNDERLINE ANY MINERAL OR SCIENCE TERMS YOU SEE IN EACH VERSE • UNDERLINE ANY MINERAL OR SCIENCE TERMS YOU SEE IN THE CHORUS… • BE READY TO CHECK WITH MR.L

  7. NEW COPY ORANGE START UP BOX #2 • 1. A NON-SILICATE MINERAL DOES NOT HAVE… • 2. THE REFLECTION OF LIGHT OFF OF A MINERAL’S SURFACE IS… • 3. THE COLOR OF A MINERAL’S POWDER IS… • 4. _____LUSTER IS OFTEN SHINY. • 5. THE RESISTANCE TO BEING SCRATCHED IS_________

  8. ORANGE START-UP BOX#3 • 1. THE PERCENTAGE OF MINERALS INSIDE A ROCK IS…. • 2. _____ARE MADE OF MINERALS, BUT MINERALS ARE NOT MADE OF_____. • 3. THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF THE PIECES INSIDE THE ROCK ARE CALLED____. • THE THREE TYPES OF TEXTURE ARE.4.____GRAINED, MEDIUM-GRAINED AND 5.________GRAINED

  9. ORANGE START UP BOX #4 • 1.GRANITE IS MADE OF 10% MICA, 55% FELDSPAR AND 35% QUARTZ.=…. • 2. A TEXTURE WHERE WE EASILY SEE ALL THAT IS INSIDE IS… • 3. A TEXTURE WHERE WE SEE SOME, BUT NOT ALL INSIDE IS.. • 4. A TEXTURE WHERE WE DON’T SEE EASILY WHAT IS INSIDE IS… • 5. A PEPPERONI PIZZA=_____GRAINED

  10. NEW ORANGE START UP BOX #1 • 1.SILICON + OXYGEN=____MINERAL • 2. NO SILICON AND NO OXYGEN=__MINERAL • 3. EARTH IN CENTER/PTOLEMY= • 4. 2 PLATES SLIDE BY OR SLIP PAST AND EARTHQUAKES FORM=_____PLATE BOUNDARY • 5. WHEN A MINERAL BUBBLES/FIZZES WHEN AN ACID HITS IT IT SHOWS A…

  11. A MINERAL IS… • NATURALLY FORMED-NOT MADE BY YOU OR ME • ROCKS ARE MADE OF MINERALS, MINERALS ARE NOT MADE OF ROCKS.

  12. A MINERAL IS… • INORGANIC OR NON-LIVING

  13. A MINERAL IS… • SOLID, NOT LIQUID OR GAS

  14. A MINERAL HAS… • A REPEATING CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURE…THIS MEANS THE ARRANGEMENT OF ATOMS ON THE INSIDE GIVES THE MINERAL ITS SHAPE • ON THE OUTSIDE • CHECK OUT MR. L’S VISUAL EXAMPLES OF THIS NOW!!!

  15. Identifying Minerals • Each mineral has its own specific properties used to identify it.

  16. Color • The same mineral can come in a variety of colors • Ex. quartz • Impurities & other factors can change mineral appearance • Color is not the best way to identify minerals

  17. Describes how a surface reflects light Ex. shiny/dull Metallic- minerals containing metals are often shiny Nonmetallic Vitreous- glassy, brilliant Silky-fibrous Resinous-plastic Waxy- greasy, oily Pearly- creamy Earthy- rough, dull Luster

  18. Streak • Color of mineral in powder form • Observed by rubbing a mineral against a piece of unglazed porcelain called a streak plate • Streak doesn’t vary like color & is often different than a mineral’s color • More reliable than color

  19. Cleavage and Fracture • Way a mineral breaks apart determined by arrangement of atoms • Cleavage- breaks along flat surfaces • Fracture- mineral breaks in an irregular way

  20. Hardness • Minerals resistance to being scratched • Ranks minerals from softest to hardest • Talc- softest known mineral • Diamond- hardest known mineral

  21. Hardness

  22. Density • Mass in a given space/ mass per unit volume • D= M/V • Density remains same regardless of sample size • Mass determined using balance • Volume determined using water displacement method • Comparisons can be made by hefting • Specific Gravity- ratio of an object’s density to the density of water

  23. Special Properties • Fluorescence- minerals glow under ultraviolet light, ex. fluorite & calcite • Magnetism- ex. Magnetite • Radioactive- ex. contain radium or uranium • Effervescence- mineral fizzes (releases carbon dioxide) when in contact with hydrochloric acid=chemical reaction/double image.. Calcite • Halite=salty taste

  24. Pictures of special properties…

  25. ROCK VOCAB/FOOD COMPARISON LAB WORK • COMPARE THE ROCK TERM WITH THE FOOOD ITEMS ON EACH TRAY. PLEASE DO NOT MOVE THE FOOD ITEMS OFF THE TRAY. • EXPLAIN AND ADD A DRAWING OF HOW THE SPECIFIC FOOD ITEM ON THE TRAY MATCHES WITH THE TERM AND DEFINTION IT IS NEXT TO. • GROUP DISCUSSION IS A PLUS!!!!

  26. FOOD COMPARISON/ROCK VOCAB • 1. ROCK 8.EROSION • 2. IGNEOUS ROCK 9.WEATHERING • 3.EXTRUSIVE IGNEOUS10.DEPOSITION • 4. INTRUSIVE IGNEOUS11.SEDIMENT • 5. SEDIMENTARY ROCK12.METAMPORPHIC • 6. CEMENTATION 13. FOLIATED META • 7. COMPACTION 14. NON-FOLIATED META • 15. COMPOSITION 16. TEXTURE • 17.FINE GRAINED TEXTURE • 18.COARSE GRAINED TEXTURE • 19. THE ROCK CYCLE
