THEMES

DECEPTION

The theme of deception is a major part of the novel because Claudine’s coping mechanism is deceiving others as well as herself.

During the group meeting for teens with alcoholic parents, she decided to go on a whim and think the best about her mother: “No. She didn’t take off. Mom’s in rehab.” (Maccready, p.13)

DENIAL

The theme of denial was relevant in a large part of Claudine’s life. Not only did she deny her vulnerability and weakness, but she denied that she was obsessive, controlling and co-dependent when Liz confronted her. When Candy, her mother’s co-worker, confronted her about the reality of the issue, Claudine was unaltered: “Stop it! Why is it so hard to believe that she finally got it together? Why, Candy? ...This time she made a commitment to get sober for good.” (Maccready, p.145) Claudine’s constant denial caused her to become dependent on things to work out the way she wanted them to; she was unprepared for reality.

REASSURANCE

The theme of reassurance was evident in the ending of the novel because Claudine was forced to deal with her reality. After realizing that her mother had passed away, Claudine finally felt reassured of reality. She had made up with Liz and even gotten closer with Matt.
