Background • Importance of Ottoman Language • The last great Eurasian empire of modern times • Influenced cultures from North Africa to Islamic nations, Central Asia and Greece • Influenced the structure of life of Bosnia, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Israel and others. • Why is it a “historical” dictionary? • Dead language • Needed to interpret historical documents • More information then just a dictionary

Needs Assessment • Four languages • Ottoman, Modern Turkish, Arabic and English • Ottoman language structure • An Ottoman word can have very different definitions depending on its origin and grammatical form • Three levels of access • Verifier (1-3): Ottoman experts • Enterers (20-30): Accredit Ottoman Scholars • Searchers(200-1000): students, hobbyists, researchers • Compared systems for code reuse • http://courses.washington.edu/ohd/system.htm

Implementation Process • Implemented in MySQL and PHP • Implemented three interfaces • Search • Entry • Verification (in progress) • Implemented an user interface with a strong usability focus • Continue meeting with clients • Entering and using real data • Continuing to develop the database and user interface

  8. Design Decisions • Two databases, a main and a temporary one • Dynamic forms, for one-to-many and many-to-many inserts • Ottoman text, grammatical form and origin make an entry unique

Evaluation Process • Usability testing with two users with given common tasks • Heuristic evaluation of user interface • Results: • Add an instruction page • Add “Back” buttons to error message pages • Exact and advanced search options for Ottoman searches • Alternate coloring of table rows for easy viewing of returned results • Added a security feature for word submission • Able to detect empty definition and translation fields
