  2. Tier 1 Poem Jacob’s Ladder Goals & Objectives Habits of Mind

  3. The Caterpillar Author Unknown A tired caterpillar went to sleep one day In a snug little cradle of silken gray. And he said, as he softly curled up in his nest, “Oh crawling was pleasant, but rest is best.” He slept through the winter long and cold, All tightly up in his blanket rolled, And at last he awoke on a warm spring day, To find that winter had gone away. He woke to find he had golden wings, And no longer need crawl over sticks and things. “Oh, the earth is nice,” said the glad butterfly, “But the sky is best, when we learn to fly.”

How do you know? A3: Why does the caterpillar say “Oh, the earth is nice/But the sky is best, when we learn to fly”? What does that mean for the caterpillar? What doe that mean for you? D1: What happened to the caterpillar over time? Support your answers in picture or written form. D2: Organize the life cycle of a caterpillar in words or pictures using scientific research. What is missing from the poem to make this scientifically correct?

  8. Tier 3 Reflections/Relevance (A1) (D3)

  9. Choose two of the ideas to complete.  Be creative. 1. Sequence the events of the poem using no more than four events. Select one optional strategy below or a teacher approved strategy to generate this project. (A1) 2. Learn more about the life cycle of plants. If this poem were written about a plant instead of a caterpillar, how would you write this poem for the plants lifestyle. Research a plant’s life cycle in order revise the poem for “A Plant”. (D3) 3. Find the book “A Very Hungry Caterpillar” to review the story. Plan a Very Hungry Caterpillar party: design an invitation, create a snack or treats for the party and create 2-3 games that could be played at the party. Be creative. Optional project strategies:  Commercial Role Play; Create a Puppet Show; Charts, Posters, Flyers, Brochures; Picture Dictionary.
