Films and Dramas Howard Liu Yang Zhang Yinping Zhang Panpan Chen The basic information of Films and dramas(especially from Hong Kong, Korean, America and Japan) The factors made the Korean wave such hot across Asia. The reasons for remake preferred to originals, especially in the USA. TV is a major site for cultural flows within the Asian region.

Hong Kong TV shows • Hong Kong TV series as a carrier of culture is an important role of Hong Kong public culture. • Hong Kong TV series has been more informative; the actors has performed lively and well. Hong Kong TV shows of itself can be a mirror of Hong Kong lifestyle and customs • Hong Kong TV contains the typical commercial elements; it also describe native life superior. Hence, Hong Kong TV is an important role for disseminate its culture. • Hong Kong TV drama is totally different from Korean drama; Hong Kong and Korean drama has its own distinctive local features.

  3. The American TV series A popular American drama series has been a surprise hit in Asia, especially for China and Korea. American drama has own its features; it is entirely different from Asian Drama, such as Korean Drama.

Korean WaveK-drama ▲Modern drama :conflicts such involving singletons, married couples, money, in-laws, and love triangles. ▲Historical drama:They are dramatisations of Korean history. ▲K-dramas is part of the broader growth in interest in Korean food, music, film, popstars, and other cultural exports.

  5. For initial movies' success, that film company, such as Dream Works and Universal Studios, are desiring to make same profitable success in Western market and attract Western audience. Due to cultural diversity, a majority of Western audience may not relate to other Asian countries, this is also because of the language barrier. Why has Hollywood remake the Asian movies?

  7. Why Korean Wave is so popular? • Koreans mix a modern lifestyle, hip hop and r&b music, and traditional culture together. • Korean pop music, film and drama have big contribute on korean wave. • Korean culture spreads across globe.

Japanese Films has influence certain countries like Taiwan and China. • Taiwan used to be Japan’s colony, so it’s appears to be the most receptive market for Japanese popular cultural products especially Japanese TV dramas. • However, since 1993 Taiwan government have banned Japanese programs, The Japanese products has earned the favour of many young people. • In 1990’s despite of pessimism of Japanese media industries, Japanese TV programs and particularly animation were more appealing than their American counterparts in Asia. • According to Leo Ching, the Taiwanese-Amercian scholar, he described this phenomenon as “Japan’s entertainment exports to Asia are on the roll”(Satellite TV sees gold in the local content 1996).   9. The Influence of Japanese Drama and Films in Taiwan • In the 1980’s when Japanese idols, were famous in East Asia, audiences was limited to a minority of Japanophiles. • In the 1990’s though it has become common for young Taiwanese to chat about Japanese idols and TV dramas.

  10. The steady rise of Japanese TV programs in Asian markets has finally encouraged the normally cautious Japanese TV industry to invest in transnational broadcast of such programs. Because of the positive reception of Japanese TV programs, particularly dramas, in Taiwan and Hong Kong, the Japanese TV industries has been convinced that they have the potential to make money in Asia. The Japanese TV industry began setting up a royalty structure for the second and third use of programs. In 1997, Sumitomo Trading Co., Ltd,. launched the first transnational Japanese pay-TV channel, JET (Japanese Entertainment Television) in partnership with TBS. a commercial TV stations whose profits from selling programs overseas are the highest in Japan.
