To prevent C from Spreading to S.V. -Ngo DinhDiem (S.V. corrupt Leader) cancels elections in the S - Viet-Cong begins fighting : Communist Group supported & supplied by Ho Chi Min

  3. GULF OF TONKIN -Diem’s gov’t unpopular -Diem is assassinated -limited bombing already begun- by Viet-cong (Ho Chi Mihn Trial) -Gulf of Tonkin U.S. ship attacked? Torpedo actually missed ship- sketchy reports LBJ asks for action (war)- all necessary power … -statement was prepared before the attack -Operation Rolling Thunderbegins intense bombing Vietnam- begin sending Large # of Troops

  4. Three months after being elected president, Lyndon B. Johnson launched Operation Rolling Thunder. Unlike the single bombing raid in August 1964, this time the raids were to take place on a regular basis. The plan was to destroy the North Vietnam economy and to force her to stop helping the guerrilla fighters in the south. Bombing was also directed against territory controlled by the NLF in South Vietnam. The plan was for Operation Rolling Thunder to last for eight weeks but it lasted for the next three years. In that time, the US dropped 1 million tons of bombs on Vietnam.- Sparticus.net

DIFFERENT WAR -American search and destroy tactics * N.V. & V.C. network of elaborate tunnels *Uproot Civilians w/ suspected ties to Vietcong, burning villages in order to “Save it” *Terrain laced w./booby traps & land mines– today 3.5million armed mines remain in V, causing 160 Civilian Causalities per month -napalm -Agent Orange
