  1. Improved Chemical Agent Monitor (ICAM) SOLDIER and BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL COMMAND (SBCCOM) New Equipment Training (NET) Overview Name Project Manager, Fielding & NET DSN 584- or COM 410-436- Name Project Manager, Fielding & NET DSN 584- or COM 410-436- 1-21433MB99

  2. Purpose • To provide attendees with an understanding of the CAM/ICAM. 1-21434MB99

  3. Agenda • Introductions • Primary and Assistant Instructor • Training materials • 2 students per CAM/ICAM • Video demonstration 1-21435MB99

  4. New Equipment Training (NET) • Length - 2 hours scheduled • Capacity - 20 soldiers per class • Training - “Hands-On” Operation Components and use PMCS Maintenance • Target Audience BN and separate company NBC personnel Maintainer (31U) • Interactive CD ROM (CAM DS Maintainer) 1-21435MB99

  5. ICAM Background • ICAM augments CAMs in Army inventory • ICAM Type Classified in Jul 93 • Fielded to USACMLS 2 Qtr FY99 (FEB 99) • Manufactured by Intellitec and developed by Graseby Ionics in the UK • Not a substitute for the M8A1 or ACADA 1-21436MB99

  6. ICAM Cautions and Warnings • NI 63 (10 milicuries) • Beta source, hazard through ingestion • Lithium batteries (BA 5800s) 1-21436MB99

  7. ICAM/CAM VIDEO DEMONSTRATION 1-21436MB99

  8. ICAM Capabilities • Provides a real time indication of chemical agent vapors • Provides changes in agent hazard • Provides post attack contamination assessment • Can be used to assist during unmasking procedures (M256A1) • Can be used to determine effectiveness of decontamination operations 1-21437MB99

  9. ICAM System Description • Hand-held portable monitor • Detects nerve and blister agent vapors • Size -- 3” (H) X 6” (W) X 16” (L) • Weighs 4 pounds • LCD displays levels of agent contamination 1-21438MB99

  10. ICAM System Components • ICAM (describe system) • Carrying case and strap • ICAM carrying harness (2) • Filtered nozzle standoff caps (4) • Protective cap • Confidence sampler • Battery (BA 5800s) ---2 • Battery assembly, training (BAT) • Buzzer • TM 1-21439MB99

  11. ICAM Operation Concept • Place battery in ICAM • Power-On • Place in H mode • Confidence Test H mode G mode • System is operational • If system doesn’t pass H or G confidence test, turn-in for maintenance 1-21440MB99

  12. ICAM/CAM Detects • Nerve GA GB GD VX • Blister H HD • LCD low 1-3 bars high 4-6 bars very high 7-8 bars 1-21440MB99

  13. ICAM System Limitations • Does Not Detect Liquid Agents • Environmental Constraints - Wind - Temperature • Nozzle Must Be Kept Clean 1-21442MB99

  14. ICAM Maintenance Concept • Operator/Unit (TM3-6665-343-10) - PMCS, clean, confidence test and replace battery • Direct Support (TM3-6665-343-23&P) - Wipe test - Complete repair • Depot - None 1-21440MB99

  15. ICAM Safety Issues • Operator - Radioactive source - Nickel-63 (NI63) 10 millicuries - Storage requirements are the same as the CAM and M8A1 • Direct Support - Annual wipe test - New wipe test kit (NSN 6665-01-447-5639) 1-21443MB99

  16. New Equipment Training • None required • Training aids available - TVT 3-41 CAM PMCS, use and maintenance - TVT 3-82 CAM employment - CD ROM/Video, CAM DS maintenance 1-21453MB99

  17. Points of Contact • Primary Instructor DSN: 584- OR Comm: (410) 436- • Assistant Instructor DSN: 584- OR Comm: (410) 436- 1-21455MB99

  18. ICAM Do’s • Make sure protective cap is on to switch on the ICAM • Start ICAM in the H mode • Place protective cap on the environmental cap when monitoring • Use clean nozzle standoff before monitoring • Know your operating environment (local interferences) • Replace nozzle standoff immediately if it becomes contaminated or dirty • Work from clean areas into contaminated areas and minimize time spent in contaminated areas • Be aware of possible pick up of contamination, especially on gloves and boots 1-21457MB99

  19. ICAM Don’ts • Don’t remove the protective cap until display is cleared down to one or zero bars • Don’t continue to sample once contamination is found • Don’t bring ICAM in contact with liquids or the surface you are monitoring • Don’t change modes until display is cleared down to one or zero bars • Don’t decontaminate a ICAM while it is in use • Don’t switch ICAM off at the end of a mission or for storage if any bars are displayed 1-21458MB99
