  2. Fire Safety • What can you do to prevent fires. • Each year in the USA, almost 40,000 children under the age of fourteen are injured in fires. • You can help prevent fire in your home by acting responsible with heat and flame, by eliminating fire hazards, and by practicing fire safety.

  3. How to Prevent Fires 1.-Keep the following things away from heat sources like, stoves, lamps, and candles: • Curtains • Blankets • Newspapers • Clothes *All of these things are flammable: materials that will burn if exposed to enought heat.

  4. 2.-Store flammable liquids, such as gasoline, outside your home in a well-ventilated area. 3.-Matches, lighters, and other sources of flame should be kept out of the reach of children. 4.-Electrival fires cand start from overloaded electrical outlets.

  5. Where Do Fires Start in a Home • Kitchen 25% • Bedroom 14% • Living Room 9% • Chimney 8% • Laundry Area 5%

  6. Escaping a Fire • When fires occur, people don’t have time to plan. In less than a minute, a small flame can turn into a large, out-of-control fire. An important part of fire safety is to have a family escape plan. • Draw a floor plan, or map of your home. Label all exits, the location of each smoke alarm, and an outside meeting place. • Make sure that everyone knows the escape routes. Be sure that all windows and doors open easily. • Keep a whistle and a flashlight next to each bed. • Practice the escape plan at least two times a year with your entire family. With your eyes closed, practice feeling your way out of your home.

  7. Escaping a Fire • Suppose it’s the middle of the night. You wake up to the sound of a smoke alarm! You smell smoke and realize your home is on fire. What do you do? 1.-Quickly roll out of bed and onto the floor. Smoke and other harmful gases from a fire rise toward the ceiling. The air is better near the floor. 2.-Crawl toward the door. If you can’t see anything because of the smoke, reach out for a wall so you can feel your way. 3.-If you have a whistle, blow it loudly. Bang on the walls and yell “Fire” as loud as you can. 4.-When you reah the door, feel it with the back of your hand. If it is cool, you may open it and crawl out as quickly as possible. 5.-Keep crawling until you are outside.
