DEFINITIONS OF COMMUNITY BASED TOURISM • Responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment and improve the wellbeing of the local people • Tourism that involves local communities, occurs on their land and is based on their cultural attraction and natural assets found on their areas.

  3. ETHICAL PESPECTIVES ON CBT. • Community ownership and control of Natural Resources • Development process should be owned by the local people- • Mechanism (By-laws, land use, contracts etc) • Realization of the impact- • Cultural values, economic benefits, natural resource conservation

IMPORTANCE OF CBT • It provide a sustainable economic opportunity for villagers • It’s a viable investment on village land- • If an appropriate investment approach is used-that encourage local participation, • Targeting people livelihoods benefits • Consider future use and management of natural resources • Capacity building process • It’s manageable by the local communities through:-

Importance cont… • village Land Use Plan:- • Has become a strategic tool that governs all the management procedures of natural resources management and use. • It takes into account, interest and aspiration of the local people in securing and promoting the NRs use rights. • Promotes pro-active process for future management and use of land and natural resources

Importance cont.. • Participatory tourism contracts which defines business between the village and tour operators • The nature of contract –tented camp, Hotel etc • Time and area of the business • Rules governing the business • Specific amount of income per each category - like land rent fee, bed fee etc

  7. CHALLENGES • Policies and Laws- • Conflict of Land act and wildlife act over the use of village land and natural resources- eg Hunting concession in the village land. • The policies and laws creates improper restrictions and denial of people rights

  8. Challenges cont… • Fraud Contracts • Some of the contracts are not participatory • Tours operators divide people through bribing (village leaders) • Lead to village land insecurity
