  1. Challenges faced by James I before 1605

  2. Spain, a Catholic country, was still causing trouble in Europe. Would you: • Declare war on them then beat them in a naval battle? • Stay out of trouble and not rock the boat • Stay away from them but bribe them to leave you alone • Marry your child to a Spanish woman so that family would leave family alone?

  3. Religious disunity is still a problem in England Do you: • Ignore it, you are the king, you make the rules. • Make some small changes, but nothing major • Make some major changes to keep the angry religious people at bay • Change the whole countries’ religion.

  4. You have been left with a debt upon taking the throne. Do you: • Scrimp and save until the finances are in the positive? • Not really worry, money can be made elsewhere, save a little here and there • Not worry at all, who cares if there’s a debt when you die? • Spend and spend so that your country is bled dry but you look oh so pretty

  5. Parliament is having a whinge at you about some election Do you: • Listen to them and take their advice • Listen to them, but don’t change, after all, who is the king around here? • Listen to them, but do the opposite of what they want • Don’t even listen to them and dismiss them, who cares about parliament.

  6. Puritans are getting on your case about religion and bishops and all that Do you: • Tell the Puritans to get lost • Have a sit down with them but don’t change • Have a sit down but realise that they’re crazy and feel better about not changing • Change the country into a Puritan country, that’ll make them happy

  7. The Dutch are still fighting the Spanish when you come to power Do you: • Stick by them, a promise was made, and it’s only the Spanish, they can be pummelled again • Stick by them but secretly consider pulling out • Sign peace with Spain but stealthily keep helping the Dutch • Abandon the Dutch and sign peace with Spain. Who needs Holland anyway?

  8. Spain in 1603 What do you think? • Ew yuck, Spain, they’re garbage • Spain? They’re ok, we can live with them • Catholics! Grrr no Catholics! • Oh my god I love Spain!
