Working On The Unit • Dynamics are different between males vs. females • Males worry about masculinity • Act out to show off • Want to be the toughest • Girls Attitude • Impress the other girls • Concerned what everyone else thinks • CRUSHES!! • “It is okay to have feelings, but not okay to act on them.” –Lee Anne Schmidt (Ward therapist)

  5. Cont. • Require more supervision/specific rules • Ward runs as two separate units • Boys use one day room, girls use the other • Level 3 clients are able to go in either day room • Boys and Girls operate on different daily schedules • Bathrooms are locked

Cont. • Be comfortable/flexible with the clients • Be willing to work with boys and girls • Touchy topics • Don’t want to cause embarrassment • Staff must work closely together and be on the same page • Communication between staff is VERY important • Read and complete the pass on notes EVERY shift • Staff must be consistent with rules and boundaries between shifts • Be present during the Team meetings

  8. Josh goes to staff and says, “I’m in love with Amanda, but Amanda doesn't like me.” The staff nods and continues to listen to Josh, “What do you think I should do about this?”

  9. What do you say? A) I know you have feelings for her and that is okay, but I think now may not be the best time to start a relationship and maybe she knows that and that is why she is not acting on any feelings. B) You have to forget about her because it isn’t going to happen. C) Do you really think a girl like Amanda would go for a guy like you? D) I think Amanda does really like you and maybe if you two started dating then you could help each other complete treatment!

  10. Megan goes up to a staff and says, “Can I go into the boys day room to play a game with Ben?” You respond by saying, “No, you are only a level 2.” She says, “I know, but the other staff always let me do it, just to play the game.”

  11. What do you say?? A) You can go, but only to play this one game. B) If the other staff says it is okay, then you can go. C) You can play the game in the hallway where there is more supervision. D) I can not allow you to do that at this time because it is not in the rules. I will talk with the other staff and see what they say about it.

  12. The group is at the rec. center all together. Lynn goes up to a male staff and says, “I’m bleeding in my private area, I think I just got my period.”

  13. What do you say?? A) I can not talk to you about this, lets go back to the unit and find a female staff. B) It will be okay, all females go through this, how about we gather every one up and go back to campus and you can talk more about it with someone you are comfortable with. C) Round all the kids up and say “Lynn got her period so we need to go back to the unit to deal with it.” D) Pick one staff to take Lynn back to campus and tell her the same thing as B.

  14. You are a female staff doing room checks and you knock and walk in on Kyle masturbating on his bed. He quickly pulls the covers up and looks at you with embarrassment.

  15. What do you say?? A) Quickly say sorry and close the door. B) Say calmly, “You need to stop.” come back later and visit with the client, “This is a treatment center and room checks are going to happen, please use the rest room for masturbation.” C ) Shout “STOP IT!” and slam the door. D) Continue on with the room check as if nothing happened.
