  2. Learning Objectives 1.To understand the function of intonation in speech. 2. To learn rules in using rising and falling pitch patterns. 3. To learn to use various intonations flexibly and naturally in communication.

  3. Step 1. Warming up • 1.Listen to the poem The Night Has a Thousand Eyes without intonation. • 2. Listen to the poem again ,and this time with intonation. Compare the difference of the two ways of reading the poem.

  4. Step 2 New lesson • Part 1 : Listen to the recording and read aloud the following sentences using rising or falling intonations. • Is the speed limit 65 or 70? • ↗ ↘ • To be or not to be. • ↗ ↘

  5. Note: In a statement or a question that presents a choice,the first alternative has a rising pitch and the second has a falling pitch.

  6. If I get a new PC ,I’ll need a table ,a printer and some speakers. The apartment has a kitchen , a living room ,two bed room and a bath.

  7. Note:when you list 2 or more items in a series,the pitch rises on the stressed syllable of every item except the last.The rise signals “more to come”:the fall signals “the end”.

  8. 1.A: I’ll meey you at 5:45. B: At 9:45? A: No.A5:45. 2.A : We’ll all meet behind Candler Hall. B : Behind Candler Hall? A: That’s right.

  9. Note: If you want clarification or repetition of a specific item , the pitch rises on the specific item you want clarified.

  10. V Summary • 如果没有语调,语言会显得十分平淡。但是,不能为了可自己的语音“洋味十足”而滥用升降掉或可以模仿奇怪的语调。语调归根结底还是语言的一种表达手段,所以贵在自然。
