  1. Learning ObjectiveName _______________________ Today, we will show common decimal numbers as percents. CFU What are we going to do today? Activate (or provide) Prior Knowledge Read each amount. Seventy-five hundredths 1. ones tenths hundredths thousandths Twenty-five hundredths 2. CFU Teacher reads problem #1. Students read problem #2. Students, you already know that place value tells you the value of decimal numbers. Today, we will use our knowledge of the place value of decimal numbers to show them as percents. ones tenths hundredths thousandths 5th Grade Number Sense 1.2 (5Q) Interpret percents as a part of a hundred; find decimal and percent equivalents for common fractions and explain why they represent the same value; compute a given percent of a whole number. Lesson to be used by EDI-trained teachers only.

  2. Concept Development • A percent (%)is a special way of writing fractions with a denominator of 100. • The root word “cent” means hundred. • Percent means “per hundred” or “out of 100.” “Cent” in everyday words. A century is 100 years. There are 100 cents in a dollar. There are 100 centimeters in a meter. Example: = “25 per hundred” 25% “25 percent” CFU On her birthday, Grandma Velma became a centenarian. How old do you think she is? How do you know? = 100 years old • A decimal number represents a whole number and part of a whole number separated by a decimal point . • Numbers can be represented with decimal numbers, words, fractions, and percents. • We often think about decimal numbers and percents in terms of parts of a dollar. Which of the following fractions means 30%? How do you know? A. B. Example: Equivalent1 forms of a number. 1 equal in value Which fraction represents the same amount as seventy-five hundredths? A. B. Parts of a dollar Uncle John says he will pay you 90% of a dollar each time you walk his dog. How much money will you earn for walking the dog one time? A. $0.09 B. $0.90 C. $9.00 $0.25 = 25 cents In your own words, what is a percent? A percent is ________.
