CEOS WGISS Carbon Data Portal: Progress and Demo

The CEOS WGISS Carbon Portal supports easy access to carbon-related data resources, allowing users to search and access data using keywords, spatial and temporal constraints. The portal has made progress since its last release, incorporating new capabilities and improvements. The team is closely collaborating with the CEOS Carbon Task and Global Carbon Project to ensure the portal meets the needs of the community.

  1. CEOS WGISS Carbon Data Portal: Progress and DemoCEOS WGISS Carbon Portal TeamReported at WGISS’48Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Hanoi, VietnamOctober 9, 2019

  2. The WGISS Carbon Community Portal • Goal: To support CEOS Carbon Science Mission by providing easy discovery of and access to carbon-related data resources in CEOS member agencies • The Objectives • To enable carbon community to easily find their interested data in the CEOS agency collections brokered by both CWIC and FedEO • To allow searching and accessing data within collections using CWIC and FedEO with keywords, spatial and/or temporal constraints • To provide common discovery and access of all CWIC partner holdings targeting at the CEOS Carbon Community

  3. Carbon Portal Task Team • The task team consists of • Development team • WGISS member agency representatives • Carbon scientists from CEOS Climate WG and Global Carbon project (GCP), a Future Earth project • Carbon scientists provide requirements, test and evaluate the portal, and suggest improvements • Monthly telecon held • Funding from NOAA and NASA to support the development team

  4. Portal Endpoints • https://cloud.csiss.gmu.edu/carbon/cwicport/ • Can be redirected from • https://gis.csiss.gmu.edu/carbon/cwicport/ -- old adress

  5. Progress since WGISS 47 • Progresses made since WGISS 47 • Released the Carbon portal to the communities (Beta version in June 2019, and version 0.9 in September)- Finish the deliverable CARB-15 • Worked with communities on the testing and evaluation of portal • Migrated the portal to a cloud environment for better services • Developed new capabilities and improvements • Exchanged with VNSC team on supporting CEOS Chair initiatives

  6. Portal release • Beta version released in July for community feedback • Version 0.9 in Sept incorporating the new capabilities based on feedback • Including • up-to-date user guides • Online interface for user feedback • Targeted to CEOS Climate WG and Global Carbon project (GCP)

  7. Working with communities • Closely collaborate with CEOS Carbon Task and Global Carbon Project in the development of the portal to ensure it is useful for the community • Collaborators are involved in • Define requirements • Design, test, evaluation • Use in their studies • Provide feedbacks for refinement and improvement • Telecons, presentations and demos have been given to CEOS Climate WG, GCP and CEOS Chair initiative team • The portal has been highlighted in the home page of the Global Carbon Project with a live link (See the screen capture right) • Feedbacks received from the online feedback system

  8. Migration to Cloud • The portal was run on a old, small server with low capability • The GeoBrain cloud is a private cloud of CSISS GMU with over 500 CPU cores and 0.5 Pb disk space built by using open source cloud software • The migration of portal to the cloud was finished in September 2019. • New address: https://cloud.csiss.gmu.edu/carbon/cwicport/ Auto redirection from the old address has been enabled.

  9. New capabilities – support search with periods • Periods • Yearly • Monthly • Daily • Hourly

  10. Implementation Progress – support search with acquisition types • Acquisition types • Modeled only • Eddy-Covariance • Field measurements • Satellite-based

  11. New capabilities– Support of more feature formats • Added GML support for User-input • In addition to GeoJSON and ESRI Shapefile • Uploaded map can be used for clipping by polygon

  12. Filter - platform • Progress • Implementing more filters – Platform • Totally 90 carbon relative platforms Platform

  13. Filter - instrument • Progress • Implementing more filters – Instrument • Totally 207 carbon relative instruments Instrument

  14. Filter - GCMD • Progress • Implementing more filters – GCMD Keywords • Totally 1517 carbon relative GCMD Keywords Keywords

  15. Mekong - forest • Use keyword “Forest” • Exclude global

  16. Way Forward Plan • Incorporating revision comments and new requirements from CEOS Climate WG and Global Carbon Project into the new version of the portal • Expanding the targeted user communities (e.g., GEO??) • Supporting CEOS Chair carbon initiative • Tailor the portal to be fit for supporting the forest carbon project at Mekong river basin • Specially customized portal • Pre-populated products • Specific datasets for Mekong • Make VNSC carbon data discoverable through the portal • Collaborate with VNSC
