  2. Do you know what a symbol is? • Symbols- can be a picture, letter, or a word that stands or means something else. • Examples:

  3. Do you know the symbols for our State? • Each state has a set of symbols. These symbols represent something that is an important part of each state.

  4. Do you know the State Animal?

  5. The deer gets it’s name from it’s white tail. They are very popular all over the state. State Animal: Whitetail Deer

  6. Do you know the State Reptile?

  7. State Reptile: Loggerhead Sea Turtle • These reptiles swim in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina. They lay their eggs on the sands of the South Carolina shore.

  9. These dogs love to swim and hunt! They are great hunting dogs. State Dog: Boykin Spaniel

  10. Do you know the State Shell?

  11. These shells can be found all over the Grand Strand on the local beaches. They come in several colors and many different sizes. State Shell: Olive Shell

  13. This bird can be found around your house and forest. They have a sweet song. Click on the Wren to listen. State Bird: Carolina Wren

  15. The Yellow Jessamine is a sweet smelling flower. It is used in many perfumes. It can also be called “Carolina Jessamine.” State Flower: Yellow Jessamine

  19. The peach is a very sweet and juicy fruit. You can find peach trees all over this state. South Carolina is one of the top peach producing state in the nation. State Fruit: Peach

  20. There is even a huge peach water tower as you drive into the town of Gaffney, South Carolina. Gaffney is located in the Upstate. State Fruit: Peach

  21. Do you know the State Beverage?

  22. You’re not from the South if you don’t like Sweet Tea! This delicious drink is enjoyed by most Southerners to stay cool from the summer’s heat. State Beverage: Sweet Tea

  24. South Carolina’s nickname is the “Palmetto State”. This tree is different from a Palm Tree. A Palm Tree can produce coconuts, a Palmetto Tree cannot. State Tree: Palmetto Tree

  25. Do you know what the State Flag looks like?

  26. The flag was designed in 1775 for soldiers to carry in the Revolutionary War. The navy blue background matched the soldier’s uniform. The crescent moon was worn on the soldier’s hats. The palmetto tree is for the palmetto trees used at Fort Moultrie to protect against the British. State Flag
