Embryology

Embryology. Can you tell what this organism is?. You will notice similarities among organisms in their early stages. The similar embryo development means they all descend from a common ancestor. The similarities amongst organisms fades as the organism develops. Embryology.

  1. Embryology

  2. Can you tell what this organism is?

  3. You will notice similarities among organisms in their early stages. The similar embryo development means they all descend from a common ancestor The similarities amongst organisms fades as the organism develops.

  4. Embryology • Embryology - Study of how multicellular organisms grow and develop (prebirth) • Embryo - an unborn or unhatched offspring in the process of development • What does it mean to grow and develop in biology? • Grow = to undergo cell division (increase in the number of cells) • Develop = differentiation usually due to gene regulation • Complexity in the organism

  5. What is an comparative embryology? • Comparative embryology – to compare and contrast embryos of different species

  6. Phylogeny means evolutionary branching. Simply stated the relationship between these organisms. Ontogeny means the development of an individual organism

  7. CER • Which organism is most closely related to the human?

  8. How does comparative embryology show support for evolution? • All embryos look similar, regardless of the organism. • These similarities are evidence for evolution. • The embryos look similar because all organisms come from a common ancestor
