  4. What to expect

  5. What we are looking for during your interview… • “Show not tell” • Authenticity • Intangibles • Relevance

  6. “Show not tell” Provide substance through examples “I am awesome. I am responsible, a good communicator, and manage my time well.” “As an older sibling, I was often tasked with taking care of my younger brother and trying my best to be a positive role-model for him. I am the first in my family to go to college and find that I excel when I am busy. Currently, I am taking 12 units, working at the Anteatery, actively involved in Chess Club, and averaging above a 3.0 GPA.”

  7. Authenticity Showcase your true self • We are seeking leaders who are as diverse as the communities we serve • There are many ways to be a great RA

  8. Intangibles What do you bring that we cannot teach?

  9. Relevance How do your experiences relate to the RA position? Some guiding questions: • What did you learn or how did you grow? • How would you use that knowledge as an RA? • Hint: Review the RA Job Description.

  10. Use B.A.R.T. • Background • My roommate had a mental health crisis in our apartment, and our other roommates were afraid. • Action • I walked my roommate to the Counseling Center, spoke with emergency responders, and followed up with our other roommates with information they needed to know. • Result • I was able to help my roommate access resources and mitigate the situation so my other roommates didn’t have to be fearful. • Tie it back to the position • RAs act as emergency responders on duty; should something similar happen to a resident, I know I can stay calm during the crisis, advocate for the resident, mitigate conflict, and maintain confidentiality. http://career.uci.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/QT_InterviewTechniques.pdf

  11. Helpful Resources • UCI Career Center • http://career.uci.edu/ • Complete the Big Interview virtual mock interview • Select Assignments at the top of the page, enter code 8560ba • Schedule an appointment with a career counselor or peer mentor on Handshake • Look over the Interview Techniques guide

  12. Best practices • Arrive early • Do not look at your phone during the interview • A small clock will be on the table; ask for a time check. • Take time to consider each question before giving a thoughtful response • Make sure you understand what is being asked • Feel free to bring something to write on to take notes • Use BART • Keep your answers concise • Be your authentic self • Use the 5 minutes at the end to ask questions—you are interviewing the organization, too! • Practice, practice, practice!
