  3. 13.3 Probability and Odds Review An independent event occurs when the outcome does not affect other events. Example: rolling a pair of die A dependent event occurs when the outcome of the first event affects the outcomes of other events. Example: selecting two cards out of a deck

  4. 13.3 Probability and Odds Probability: The likelihood that a given event will occur. If an event can succeed in ‘s’ ways and fail in ‘f’ ways, then the probability of success and the Probability of failure are determined as follows: = = Since an event can either succeed or fail, the probability of either occurring is 1.

  5. Probability Odds: The odds of a successful outcome of an event is the ratio of the probability of its success to the probability of its failure. Odds is a comparison of possible outcomes, not the possibility of an outcome.

  6. Probability Example: Determine the probability of picking a diamond out of a standard deck of cards. Example: Determine the odds of picking a diamond out of a standard deck of cards.

  7. Probability Example: On the volleyball team, there are 5 freshmen, 6 sophomores, 9 juniors, and 4 seniors. If one is selected at random, what is the probability that the student is a freshman? Example: What are the odds that the student is a freshman?
