  3. First Step • You need to create a thesis statement. • You need to know what you are arguing

  4. POSSIBLE IDEAS • If you want to compare/contrast Lisa and Jefferies—go for it. • Think about the power structure in their relationship—who has all the power? • Jefferies makes a transition from seeing her as a woman to a partner. • Lisa starts off as a typical woman who only wanted a commitment to a partner who has more power in her relationship

  5. Jefferies, Thornwald, Doyle • Decide: How did they treat the women in the movie? Did they act as if they were “superior” to the women? Can you make a big statement about how their behavior reflected society of the 1950’s or can you make a big statement about how the men changed because of the women?

  6. SAMPLE In the movie Rear Window. Jefferies makes the biggest transition because he realized that Lisa was not just a stereotypical 1950’s woman who could only be a housewife. What do I need to prove? Treated Lisa poorly-didn’t want to marry her because she is too into fashion and NYC limelight. Realized that Lisa had good intuition about Thorwald Allowed Lisa to take a risk that most women would not have been able to do—climb wall—get evidence. Her actions led him to realize she is not some vapid woman but someone who could be adventurous and share his life with him.

  7. Lisa/Stella • Although initially Lisa acted as if she was a typical 1950’s woman, she proved that she could keep up and ahead of the men in the movie when it came to solving the murder mystery. In fact, she is the hero of the movie.
