Call to Action • The Federal Government is calling for 3 million new youth mentors by the year 2010 because they know mentoring is a powerful intervention that works. • Last year the Federal Government invested 120 million dollars in youth mentoring, because research shows that when done correctly, it is a powerful intervention for at-risk youth. • The Federal Government recognizes that a large percentage of these mentors will come out of the faith-based world. • SO…NOW WHAT?

  5. Mentoring Works • The Impact • Children involved with mentors are: • 52% less likely to skip school • 46% less likely to use drugs • 33% less likely to engage in violence • 27% less likely to begin drinking * From Making a Difference: An Impact Study of Big Brothers Big Sisters

  7. The Mentoring Alliance • Bringing hope through youth mentor recruitment and training. • The Mentoring Alliance bridges faith-based resources with community mentoring programs to help meet the needs of our county’s under supported and disadvantaged youth.

  8. Vision • Raise up an army of mentors to serve on the front lines of the war for our county’s youth. • Train up and deploy 1000 new youth mentor candidates by 2008, through partnering with San Diego County’s: faith, community, business, government & philanthropic organizations. • Equip the San Diego faith community to respond to the immediate needs of our county’s most forgotten youth (those in the Juvenile Justice System, Foster Care, & portions of the Public School System).

  13. What is a Mentor? • A Mentor: • Is a trusted friend, confidant, & advisor • Is someone who can listen • Guides the youth to attain his or her life goals • Is someone who helps a youth discover & understand the world

What is a MRA? • Mentoring Recruitment Ambassador A member of the congregation or organization who is willing to share the truth that mentoring works, actively asks individuals within the organization to consider becoming a youth mentor, and is in communication with The Mentoring Alliance regarding recruitment events and trainings.

Discipleship versus Mentoring • Discipleship – an intentional relationship in which we walk alongside other disciples in order to encourage, equip, and challenge one another in love to grow toward maturity in Christ. Wanted: Men to Mentor • There is a critical shortage of male mentors. • Many boys wait years for a mentor, or are never matched and time out of the program. • Bobb Biehl – Mentoring In my experience with the thousands of churches I’ve interacted with I would estimate that 75-85% of men believe there is no significant ministry for them in the church. • Could mentoring be a perfect match for many men in our congregation?

  17. Faith-Based Partnership The Mentoring Alliance helps the congregation: • Answer the call to help the often forgotten and needy youth • Become equipped to serve in the community via the mentoring relationship • Increase inter-congregation cooperation, connection & resource sharing • The Mentoring Alliance does not encourage proselytizing the youth and our resources are used for non-religious activities.
