  10. Chronology of NGN Standardization in ITU-T Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 • First workshop on NGN in ITU-T convened in Geneva, 9-10 July 2003 • Meeting convened with cooperation from SGs 11, 13, 16 and SSG (predecessor to SG 19) • Presentations from different interest groups • SG 13 was tasked to lead study group on NGN • First JRG-NGN meeting, 29 September to 2 October 2003 • Four draft Recommendations were generated • NGN Focus Group was formed in May 2004 • Study Group 13 (NGN SG) established by WTSA-04 as the lead SG for NGN studies • NGN-GSI started in 2006 and is continuing

  11. Next Generation Network (NGN) Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 A packet-based network able to provide telecommunication services and able to make use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologiesand in whichservice-related functionsareindependent from underlying transport-related technologies. It enables unfettered access for users to networks and to competing service providers and/or services of their choice. It supports generalized mobility which will allow consistent and ubiquitous provision of services to users. Source: ITU-T RecommendationY.2001

  12. Different aspects of NGN (I) Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 Packet-based transfer  Separation of control functions among bearer capabilities, call/session, and application/service Decoupling of service provision from transport, and provision of open interfaces Support for a wide range of services, applications and mechanisms based on service building blocks (including real time/streaming/non-real time services and multi-media)

  13. Different aspects of NGN (II) Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 Broadband capabilities with end-to-end QoS and transparency Interworking with legacy networks via open interfaces Generalised mobility Unfettered access by users to different service providers A variety of identification schemes which can be resolved to IP addresses for the purposes of routing in IP networks

  14. Different aspects of NGN (III) Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 Unified service characteristics for the same service as perceived by the user Converged services between Fixed and Mobile networks Independence of service-related functions from underlying transport technologies Support of multiple last mile technologies Compliant with all Regulatory requirements, for example concerning emergency communications and security/privacy

  15. In Brief Colmbo, Sri Lanka, 7-10 April 2009 NGN, a single network providing services agnostic to the underlying transmission technologies and through different access networks • Simplicity • Increased productivity • Increase customer satisfaction • Increased revenue
