  2. Song Qingling Song Qingling(1893—1981) a great woman in China a vice-president of the PRC In 1915 she married Dr.Sun Zhongshan and followed him to oppose the war of aggression. Since the PRC was founded , she had busied herself with various welfare activities , ranging from heading the Woman’s Federation to a number of committees involving children .After her death , Song Qingling Fund Committee For Children was set up to help take care of orphaned children . She made great contributions to revolution,women and children and to defending the peace of the world . On May 8 , 1981 Song Qingling , a vice-commissarial, was honored a doctor’s degree in law by Victoria University Of Canada . In 1961 Chairman Mao interviewed Song Qingling at Sun Zhongshan’s former residence in Shanghai . Song Qingling , one of the vice-presidents of the People’s Republic Of China ,celebrated May Day with children in Jinshan Park of Beijing in 1962 .

Madame Curie(1867—1934) a great scientist of physics and chemistry She was the discover of radium and the first person in the world to receive two Nobel prizes Nov.7,1867: born in Poland 1891: moved to Paris and studied chemistry and physics there 1893: took a first-class degree in physics and a degree in mathematics 1895: married Pierre Curie,a very bright scientist 1898: discovered polonium—one of radioactive minerals 1902: discovered radium 1903: received her doctor’s degree; She and Pierre Curie were given the Nobel Prize for Physics 1906: Pierre died in a road accident. 1911: received the Nobel Prize for chemistry 1934: died in Paris at the age of 66 after 10 years’ blindness and suffering from a disease of the blood Achievements : discovered radioactive activity , polonium and radium ; received two Nobel prizes . Characters : a strong will , great determination and courage ; hard-working , optimistic, selfless (She is willing to share her knowledge , her interest in women’s rights .)

  4. Pearl S .Buck Pearl S. Buck(1892– 1973) a famous American writer She was born in the USA but grew up in Zhejiang Province after her parents moved to China in 1895 . She first learnt Chinese and was later taught English . From 1910 to 1914 she studied in America and then returned to China . She wrote many novels set in China . In 1931 she wrote her best-known novel , The Good Earth .She won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1938 . She played an important part in connecting the culture and civilization between the East and the West . some of the books that she wrote with her family in her childhood

  5. Mother Teresa(1910—1997 ) a world-famous Catholic nun From the age of 18 Mother Teresa worked in India to help the poor . For more than 30 years she took care of people who were mentally or physically disabled . She was given the Nobel prize for Peace in 1979 . She was loved and worshipped in India . Maiden name: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu Birthplace: Skopje, Yugoslavia (what is now Macedonia) Residence: Calcutta, India 1928: went to India and taught at a convent school in Calcutta 1937: took her final vows 1948: left the convent to work alone in the slums; received some medical training in Paris 1950: the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa's sisterhood) started 1952: House for the Dying opened 1957: the Missionaries of Charity started work with lepers and in many disaster areas of the world 1971: awarded the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize 1979: awarded the Nobel Peace Prize Young Teresa Mother Teresa said , “ Works of love are works of peace .” Mother Teresa was working .

Jiang Jie(1920—1949 ) a great revolutionist Former Names : Jiang Zhujun , Jiang Zhiwei 1920,8,20: be born in Zigong , Sichuan Province 1939: She was admitted to China College in Chongqin at public expense and joined the Communist Party secretly . 1944: She was admitted to Sichuan University and studied at Agriculture Institute . 1945: She married Peng Yongwu and a year later they had a son named Peng Yun . 1946: After graduation from Sichuan University , she went back to Chongqing , where she took part in and led students’ movements . 1947: The newspaper Push Forward was founded . She took charge of proofreading , trimming and transmitting telecommunication manuscript and issuance. 1948,6: She was arrested and sent to a prison in Chongqing which is called “Zha Zi Dong” in Chinese. In prison she would rather die than give in . 1949,11,14: She was killed by the enemy secretly when she was only 29 .

Yang Kaihui(1901—1930 ) a great woman revolutionist , one of the earliest female communist party members , the first wife of Mao Zedong 1901: be born at Bancang , Changsha County , Hunan 1913: Her family moved to Changsha and settled there after her father returned from studying in Europe 1914: met Mao Zedong , who was at that time the best pupil of Yang’s father Yang Changji. 1918: moved to Beijing with her family because her father was offered a post as a professor in Beijing University . In September, Mao also came to Beijing , so they met again . 1920: got married to Mao Zedong ; They didn’t hold a wedding so as to show they didn’t take the conventional pattern . 1921: joined the Communist Party in autumn 1923—1924: In 1923 , Mao went to shanghai to work as Minister of the Central Organization Department . The next year Yang followed Mao to Shanghai and worked with Xiang Jingyu , organizing the night school for women workers of cotton mills . In the next few years , she followed Mao to Guangzhou and Wuhan , taking care of Mao and their children . 1927: Yang along with two children returned to her old house in the suburb of Changsha 1930: Yang was arrested in Bancang in October . She together with Mao Anying was imprisoned , but she never gave in . She was killed on November 14 , when she was only 29 years old .   12. Xiang Jingyu(1895—1928 ) an outstanding female revolutionist She was the first female member of the central committee in the history of the Chinese Communist Party . Former Name: Xiang Junxian Nationality: tu 1895: be born in Hunan 1916: returned to her hometown Xupu County after graduation from school ; From the age of 6 till 21 , early or late she studied at a family school , a new-style primary school , the third and first female teacher-training schools and Zhounan School For Girls . 1919: went to France to study as well as work with Mao Zedong and Cai Hesen 1920,6: married Cai Hesen in France but parted in Moscow in 1926 1922: joined the Communist Party in Shanghai ; attended and was elected a member of the Central Committee in the 2nd , 3rd , and 4th National Congresses . 1925: went to the Soviet Union and studied in Eastern University 1927,4: returned from Russia for the 5th National Congress and later remained in Wuhan to do revolutionary work 1928: be arrested and later killed in Hankou Xiang Jingyu’s former residence the Monument to Xiang Jingyu with her family in her childhood

She would rather die than give in .In the end she was killed by the enemy when she was less than 15 years old . Aug.1,1947: She was posthumously accepted as a formal member of the Communist Party of China . Florence Nightingale an Italy-born Englishwoman;the founder of hospital nursing ; invented pie charts and opened the first nurse-training school in the world ; made great contributions to developing hospital nursing . She was born in a rich family in Italy . As a young woman , she learned to be a nurse . Soon , she supervised a hospital for women in London and she was a great success. In 1854 she with 38 nurses volunteered to Turkey to help take care of the British soldiers in a hospital . Two years later , she went back to England and started a school for nurses . When she was 43 , she became sick . She was in bed for the rest of her life . She died at the age of 90 .Today , named after her name, an award called Nightingale Prize was set up to honor the nurses who make great contributions to hospital nursing . Nightingale Prize

  17. Helen Keller(1880-1968) Helen Keller was born in America . As a little girl , she lost her sight and hearing . At the age of seven , she began learning finger language and Braille with the help of her teacher Annie Sullivan . Later , she learned speaking and listening through her hands .She devoted all her life to helping the deaf and the blind . She travelled around the world and wrote a number of books , such as Helen Keller’s diary , The Story of My Life , The Open Gate . Her famous writing If I Were Not Blind For Three Days has inspired many people to face difficulties in their lives . Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan .

Helen Thayer She was the first woman to solo any of the World’s Poles . 1937,11: born in New Zealand 1988: travelled alone to the North Pole 1997: travelled alone to Antarctica Books she wrote :Polar Dream , Three Among Wolves , Trekking the Gobi -- Desert of Dreams and Despair Helen Thayer Helen Thayer and her faithful dog Charlie .
