Health Insurance Reminder • U.S. immigration regulations require J-1 students and their J-2 dependents to have health insurance throughout the period of participation in the Exchange Visitor Program. • The University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UC SHIP) meets all J visa health insurance requirements, including coverage for medical evacuation and repatriation. • Your automatic enrollment in UC SHIP will begin on the first day of the quarter. • Any questions regarding UC SHIP please contact Student Health and Counseling Services at Student Health & Wellness Center (SHWC). The center is located on La Rue Road between Hutchison Drive and Orchard Road, across the street from the Activities and Recreation Center (ARC) . Or by phone at 530-752-2300.

  3. Overview International Students in J-1 status have limited work authorization available. • On-campus employment • Off-campus employment

  4. On-campus Employment • Academic Year: Part-time (no more than 20 hours per week) • Summer and official school breaks: Full-time • “On campus” = UC Davis campus including UC Davis Extension and UC Davis Medical Center • Prior authorization is needed from SISS for on-campus employment

Authorization for On-Campus Employment • J-1 On-campus employment applications must be received at SISS PRIOR to employment start date • Complete SISS J-1 On-Campus Employment Form • Download form from http://siss.ucdavis.edu or pick up from SISS office • SISS will provide authorization to begin employment • Authorization is valid for MAXIMUM 12 MONTHS, depending on employment offer letter

  6. Off-campus Employment • Academic Training • Economic Hardship Work authorization is ALWAYS required BEFORE off-campus work begins

Academic Training • Work, training or experience related to field of study • Employer-specific = separate authorization for each training • Paid vs. unpaid academic training • Simultaneous or sequential academic training • Part-time employment = full-time academic training Example: Carolina works at 2 labs off campus for 3 months: Lab 1 = 10 hours/week Lab 2 = 8 hours/week 2 separate academic training authorizations from SISS Carolina has used 3 months of academic training

Academic Training Timeline • Work authorization is required BEFORE employment begins • Eligible for immediate academic training with authorization from SISS • Post-completion academic training: Employment must begin no later than 30 days after program completion. Reminder: DS-2019 must be extended for academic training before DS-2019 expires.

Length of Academic Training Undergraduate & Graduate Students: • 18 months total OR • Length of program of study if less than 18 months Example: program of study is 9 months = 9 months of Academic Training Doctoral Students: • Maximum initial 18 months • Possible 18 month extension for post-doctoral research position • Total 36 months

  10. Unpaid Academic Training • During program of study or after program completion • Requires: • Approval of academic department andSISS • After program completion: proof of financial support for living expenses for duration of Academic Training

Academic Training Application • Pick up Academic Training Form from SISS • Obtain a job offer letter from your employer • Request a letter of recommendation from your academic advisor/graduate advisor • Submit application to SISS • SISS authorizes academic training: new DS-2019 and authorization letter

Economic Hardship • Proof of unforeseen financial circumstances after enrollment in school • Enrolled full-time and in good academic standing • Work is limited to 20 hours/week, full-time during official school breaks and vacations • Work does not need to be related to field of study • Authorization is granted by SISS or program sponsor See your International Student Advisor at SISS!

Yes, authorization from SISS is required before employment begins.

  17. Q: When must a student have work authorization in order to work off-campus? 1. Before starting employment 2. Whenever they have a free moment 3. After the employer asks them for work authorization 4. As long as they don’t work over 20 hours per week

  18. Q: If a student’s academic program is for 6 months, how much Academic Training does the student qualify for? 1. None 2. 6 months 3. 18 months BONUS: After program completion, can a student still apply for Academic Training? Academic Training must begin within 30 days of completion of academic program. Application must be received at SISS before DS-2019 expiration date.
