  2. TARTU? ESTONIA? TARTU

  3. A SMALL CITY IN A SMALL COUNTRY Swedish rule 1561-1721: progress of education ensured that this period became imprinted as 'the good old Swedish time' in the Estonian collective memory. Dorpat 1553 >> A woodcut from 1582, depicting the Muscovites' terror in Livonia.

  4. AN UNIVERSITY IN DORPAT • The University of Tartu (Academia Gustaviana) was founded in 1632 by the Swedish King Gustavus II Adolphus. • The first students were enrolled in April 1632.

  5. DORPAT >> JURJEV • 1802- the university in Tartu was reopened as a Kaiserliche Universität zu Dorpat. • Alexander Igave the university the legal status of a Russian state university with German as the language of instruction. • In the wave of russification from 1889, Tartu was named Jurjev and University was converted into Imperatorskij Jurjevskij Universitet. The language of instruction was Russian.

  6. Some researchers at Tartu University • Moritz Hermann Jacobi, the inventor of galvanoplastics; Karl Ernst von Baer, the founder of the theory of evolution and contemporary embryology; Wilhelm Ostwald(Nobel prize 1909), the founder of physical chemistry and discoverer of salt effects; Alexander Schmidt, the founder of the fermentation theory of blood coagulation and blood transfusion principles ...

  7. JURJEV >DORPAT >TARTU… Tartu in 1912 In the spring of 1918, Russian university was closed down and German occupation forces opened the Landesuniversität in Dorpat. In1919 the university opened its doors as Tartu University of the Republic of Estonia with Estonian as the language of instruction.

  8. Again Jurjev? Or Dorpat? Or what? • 1940-1941 - Tartu State University, Soviet time:scientific contacts with Western European universities were interrupted.Curricula were replaced by the common syllabi of the Soviet Unionbased on the Marxist-Leninist ideology. • 1942-1944 German occupation >Ostland-Universität in Dorpatwas planned to serve the whole Baltic area(German as the language of instruction). Taking into consideration the needs of the time, the university was still opened with instruction in Estonian.

  9. GOOD OLD SOVIET TIME?? 1944 - againthe Soviet time and Tartu State University. Political cataclysms and repressions affected university. In May 1950 one of the major symbols of the old university – the monument to Gustav II Adolf, the King of Sweden– was removed. It is 1932 – they could not expect it
