  1. Contractor Induction Program Gippsland Southern Health Service is committed to a safe and healthy work environment.

Introduction • Gippsland Southern Health Service recognises its moral and legal responsibility to provide a safe and healthy work environment for employees, contractors, customers and visitors. • This commitment extends to ensuring that the organization's operations do not place the local community at risk of injury, illness or property damage.

  3. Organization • Gippsland Southern Health Service has over 400 employees on 2 main sites • Gippsland Southern Health Service offers acute, aged care and community health services to the community • Gippsland Southern Health Service has 65 beds at Korumburra and 63 beds at Leongatha

  4. Organization • Gippsland Southern Health Service has an occupancy rate of between 65 % and 170 %. • Wednesdays and theatre days are high demand days at Korumburra • Thursdays and theatre days are high demand days at Leongatha • Theatre operates most weekdays at Leongatha

  7. Site Rules • Clients are entitled to privacy, courtesy and respect. • Staff often need to consult in privacy with clients. Respect those situations. • Members of the public need to be protected from injury. • The hospital will remain operational during works

  8. Site Rules • Areas need to be left clean and tidy at the end of each work period. • Work areas need to be fenced off to prevent access by both adults and children. • Noise is a hazard in many circumstances and should be kept to a minimum

  9. Site Rules • Cleaner’s rooms and stores need to be kept locked. • Tools, materials and equipment should not be left in public areas. • No utilities (water, power) should be shut down without warning. • All work must be carried out in a safe manner.

  10. Permits to Work • Gippsland Southern Health Service uses no permits as no confined spaces exist. • Follow any of your company guidelines on this matter. • Hot Work may require the disabling of part of the Fire protection system to prevent false alarms. (Companies will bear any costs of false alarms)

  11. Emergency Procedures • Treat every alarm as real unless warned of a test situation. • Fire system coverage can only be disabled after notification. Coverage must be reinstated at the end of the day. • Assembly areas exist outside most buildings (“EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY AREA”) • Take direction from senior staff member present.

  12. Hazard Reporting • All hazards should be reported to your supervisor. • In cases of immediate danger, STOP WORKand have the hazard dealt with. • Hazards can be reported using the Gippsland Southern Health Service Hazard ID Form.

  13. Incident & Injury Reporting • All incidents and injuries must be reported. • Use your company reporting process and notify Gippsland Southern Health Service of the incident or injury • Gippsland Southern Health Service use the RISKMAN incident reporting system • Forms are available in all departments

  14. First Aid • First aid is available at either campus at the Nurse Stations. • Contractors will supply first aid kits in site sheds, vehicles or lunch rooms. • Doctors operate as private practitioners and charge accordingly. • Work injuries need to be dealt with following your company procedures.

  15. Personal Protective Equipment • Gippsland Southern Health Service is not responsible to supply PPE to contractors and their employees. • Contractors are required to identify where PPE should be used and ensure that all employees use the supplied PPE. • PPE should be kept in good working order or be replaced.

  16. Restricted Areas • Restrictions are in place to reduce the risks to employees, contractors, clients and the public. • Operating theatres are restricted area. Entry is by prior arrangement only. • All cleaner’s rooms and stores are locked to limit entry and for security. • Occupied rooms and offices. Knock First.

  17. Security and Access • Some doors are keypad entry or exit for client safety. • Ensure that nursing home residents don’t follow you out of locked doors • Timed locking of doors is in place in some areas for staff security. • Nightly security patrols are conducted.

  18. Normal Operating Hours • Normal operating hours are 7.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday to Friday. • Work outside these hours must be notified prior to the event. • Gippsland Southern Health Service operates 24/7 Healthcare facilities.

  19. Final Note Gippsland Southern Health Service reserves the right to have it’s staff stop any activity that is deemed to be a risk to the safety of the staff, clients or the public.
