  1. Progettazione People build Castles in the air but at The Children's Studio we laid foundations under it. We started our long term, in-depth “Progetto" on January 6th 2011. Our Castle Project has been a big hit! Little girls always imagined themselves to be princesses and boys pretended to be brave knights. Our first activity was a role play. We converted our Living Area into a castle room and our pretend play became a reflection of the children’s ideas. Ms.Amee added a variety of props and costumes and the children planned the decor. They made paintings and suggested hanging curtains on the wall to make it look prettier. We opened the curtains and invited our friends over to join us for a royal tea party. We made a drawing of a castle based on our imagination and when we revisited our castle drawing after two months, Ms. Amee once again asked us to draw another castle. The details in the second drawings were magnificent. You must see it to believe it! Our imagination along with tons of illustrations, hundreds of pictures and dozens of books...we have done it! One project evolved to another, indeed child oriented.

  2. This project has truly been a reflection of the children's ideas. Every day the conversations grew longer and the group would propose a variety of ideas. Sometimes we catered to math and language, other times it was writing, art and history. No matter what, LEARNING was always the integral part. We wrote with feathers, played memory games, decorated our crowns and learned to Google images and videos. How do we come up with the long term project? The teachers spend much of their time observing and documenting conversations throughout each day. The teacher selects the topic for “progetto" based on these observations. We then begin to engage a small group into a detailed study about a particular topic. Our goal is to stimulate the children’s curiosity and build upon their knowledge. We challenge the children to extend their ideas by posing thought provoking questions and bringing in new perspectives.

  3. The final step in our castle project was a visit to an authentic castle at Felician College. During our visit, we used our observational skills as we worked on the grounds of the college creating our representational drawings of the castle.
