  4. Sender Responsibilities • Determine the purpose of the message • Analyze the point of view of the receiver • Choose the medium to get the message across (Symbol)

  5. Examples of Messages or Symbols • Words, pictures, music, facial expressions • Oral or visual tools used to transmit the sender’s message

  6. Receiver Responsibilities • Analyze the sender’s background and values to comprehend the message • Decode the message

  7. Feedback • Ensures accuracy (mutual understanding) • It’s constant • Takes various forms

  8. React to Feedback • Answer questions, analyze nonverbals, face-to-face; ensures receiver understood message • It is the critical link in the communication process VERY IMPORTANT!!!

  9. Types of Communication • Verbal - briefings, speeches, meetings • Nonverbal - body language

  10. Written Communication • Clarity is the key • Memos, letters • Use AF Tongue and Quill (Jun 97)

  24. 3 Kinds of Upward Communication 1. Special Expert Information - information about how to perform a particular task - supervisors use info to design jobs and make work assignments

  25. 2. Feedback - information about the extent to which supervisors’ orders have been carried out 3. Warnings - information about problems subordinates encounter, especially when they involve or might influence other units of the organization

They were talking in very loud voices. They were both next to a woman talking to a man with a baby in his lap. The red bus passed a yellow car before stopping in front of a school. The black man got off the bus to go to work.
