  2. 85T MS Magnet available to User Program • November 2008: • 16 user proposals received • 10 proposals from external users • 4 US Universities • 1 US Industrial Lab • 5 Overseas Universities • 1 proposal from NHMFL Host Institutions • 1 LANL (MPA-10) • 5 proposals from NHMFL Internal Users • 2 NHMFL-PFF • 3 NHMFL-DC

  3. Proposal Review The review panel with representatives from each campus of the NHMFL selected 10 proposals. 6 Granted magnet time. 4 External 2 Internal (1 PFF, 1 DC) 4 Backup experiments. 2 External 1 LANL 1 Internal (DC)

  4. 85T Pulsed Magnet Experimental Protocol • 2 weeks of experimental time for each experiment. • 1 week qualifying run in 65T short pulse magnet. • 1 week of 85T MS time. Using same samples and equipment that will be used in the 85T run. Results from 65T run reviewed by NHMFL – PFF support personnel and HUPO (Head of User Program Operations). 5 days 9.00am – 4.00pm 4 full field (85T) shots/day are expected

  5. 85T Pulsed Magnet 1st Set of Experimental Runs • 2 users have completed 85T MS runs. • John Singleton. NHMFL-PFF (samples from Oak Ridge Nat’l Lab) • (Detection of extra quantum oscillation frequencies in the cuprate superconductors) • Suchitra Sebastian and Gilbert Lonzarich. Cambridge Univ. • (Fermi Surface Emergence in Underdoped YBa2Cu3O6+X Cuprates)

  6. Magnetic Fields above 60T measure the weak Fermi-surface warping due to interlayer transport.

  7. Apparent Divergence of Effective Mass in YBCO 6+x as doping decreases toward x=0.49

  8. 85T Insert Status June 2009 85T insert fails. Next User Experimental Run Begins October 13th 2009 Winding of layer 8 (final layer) of the replacement 85T MS Magnet insert coil. Budget increases in 2009 devoted to increasing inventory of replacement insert coils and ‘jump-starting’ insert coil development toward 100T.

  9. 85T MS Magnet Program: Timeline 09/28/09 – 10/09/09 85T insert testing and training 65T SP magnet installation and training 10/13/09 85T MS experimental runs begin January 2010 Call for proposals for next set of 85T runs goes out February 2010 Proposals due Mid February 2010 Proposals evaluated and ranked by review committee consisting of NHMFL scientists and at least 2 external scientists. Spring 2010 3rd 85T insert completed (projection) Summer 2010 2nd set of experimental runs begins

  10. 85T Experimental Program statistics 6 users are scheduled October 2009 – January 2010. After the completion of the 1st set of 85T runs. 8 users. 6 primary and 2 backup will have been accommodated. ~150 85T shots will have been provided to users.
