  3. II. The English • First Settlement • Jamestown, VA (1607) • Failed until Tobacco • Plymouth, MA • The Pilgrims • Seeking religious freedoms (PURITANS) • Colonies grow • Due to resources • Fishing • Lumber • Farms • Cash Crops • Government • King held direct rule over the colonies

Struggling for Power • France and England are top powers • Claims • France • Canada and Central United States • Spain • Southwest United States, Texas and Flordia • England • Maintained colonies on the East Coast • French and Indian War (1754-1763) • The Seven Years’ War in Europe • The Treaty of Paris (1763) • Ended the War • French have to transfer Canada and the lands east of the Mississippi River to England • Spain (Allied with France) gives Florida to the British
