  1. ECE 678 ProjectOptical Switching Router • Group Member • Yun Zhao • Yeliang Zhang • Instructor • Dr. Martinez Tuesday, March 26, 2002

  2. Problem Statement • The big won’t eat the small, the fast will beat the slow (J. Chambers ---- Cisco) • All-optical networks provide high speed internet connection • All-optical networks = DWDM + optical switching router + GMPLS • The optical switch is an important and core part of all-optical IP networks

  3. Problem Statement (continue) • Current available types of optical switches: • OEO • OOO • Current shipping products are ALL OEO • In the future, we will see OOO

  4. What is an OEO switch? • This is an OEO switch • Incoming signals are converted from Optical to Electrical • Signal is switched electrically • Outgoing signals are converted back to optical

  5. OEO Optical Switch CDR Clock and Data Recovery P Header Processing ACS Automatic Crosspoint Selection

  6. How Big Can We Make OEO Optical Switches? Current available 64x64 and 32x32 electrical crosspoint switches • Each port of the crosspoint runs at 2.5Gb/s So, how do we make large switches from these?

  7. Large OEO Switches Using Smaller Martices • 3-stage Clos Matrix

  8. How Big Can We Make OEO Optical Switches? • Using multi-stage Clos non-blocking architecture Using 32x32 switch => 512x512 Using 64x64 switch => 2048x2048 Using 128x128 switch => 8192x8192(20 Terabits/sec)

  9. When Does an All-Optical Switch(OOO) Make Sense? • Chief virtue of an optical core: • Complexity is a flat function, independent of bit rate • 2.5 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s… • For 40 Gb/s optical fabrics win vs. electrical • For 10 Gb/s optical fabrics may win • Below that electronics is going to be tough to beat • So, beyond 20 Tb/s we will need optical cores

  10. Scalability Crossover Point • Optical Switch Scaling (from Tellium)

  11. Optical Switch Component • Optical crossconnect • Optical add-drop multiplexer (OADM) • Wavelength converter • Tunable laser

  12. MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System)

  13. Label Switch Router Optical Node Control Optical Network Core Network Label Edge Router Edge Networks Edge Networks Edge Networks Edge Networks Optical Switching Router • OSR : Optical Switch Architecture + GMPLS Protocol

  14. Objective • Propose an architecture draft for optical switching router • Get familiar with structure of the optical switching router and the mechanism of optical switching (including GMPLS) • Optical switching router components, control plane, their function and interaction

  15. Research Methodology • Survey on topic of optical switching • Discuss optical switching router architecture • Discuss models for optical layer control and signaling • Case study of commercial optical switching products

  16. Project Concentration • Optical processing • Optical devices (MEMS, TOADM, FILTER etc.) • Control plane • GMPLS

  17. Expected Result • Expected to • Know structure of the optical switching router and how it works • Grasp the concept of optical switching router physical implementation • Understand components of the optical switching router and their function
