Vocabulary Strategy:Idioms • Idioms are expressions in which the entire meaning is different from the usual meanings of the individual words. • We can’t understand the meaning of these expressions by looking at the meaning of each word. Example: call the shots You can’t find the meaning by looking at each word. The expression means “to be in charge.”

  3. Idioms (cont.) • Practice Idioms • What do the following expressions mean? Something up his sleeve Felt like a million dollars All bark and no bite A drop in the bucket Crack a smile

  4. Word Work:Phonics /ir/ spelled ear, ere, eer Oh dear, I fear the little deer is no longer here. Which words have the /ir/ sound?

  5. Word Work High frequency words: clothes, enough Reread decodable reader 24: The Overholts Fluency: practice companion page 146 “We, The People”

  6. Grammar:Direct Objects in Sentences Daria reads books. Sam played softball. Phil and Tai studied science. What is the subject of each sentence? (underline once) Circle the verb in each sentence. Draw a box around the last word in each sentence. The word in the box is called a direct object. A direct object is who or what the verb does.

  7. Reinforce the Theme Vocab. • Government: A group of people who are in charge of a place. • Elect: To choose someone by voting • Taxes: Money that goes to the government

  8. Reinforce the Theme • What have you learned so far? • What are some ways the government helps you stay safe? • What is one way the government helps you learn? • What are some ways the government helps you have fun?

Comprehension Skills : Draw Conclusions • Drawing conclusions means putting together details from the text with their own knowledge to fill in some information • Page 8: Our Leaders and Helpers • What might you conclude about how much work there is to do if governments need councils and mayors? • What conclusions can you draw about the need for teamwork between the mayor and council? • What can you conclude about the importance of the mayor’s job based on the tasks he or she does?

  10. Prepare to Read:Use Text Features: Index Look at the index on page 32 Where would we find information about mayors? About democracy? About where governments get money? Reread pages 6-17 How did the text features help you understand details about local government? What conclusions can you draw about local government?

  11. Write Poems: Quatrain • Models: Sleigh Ride and The American Flag (writing model chart p. 48) It is important to include descriptive language to help readers visualize my quatrain. You can use a rhyming dictionary to help find a rhyming word. I have a neat old baseball mitt. My Grandpa Charlie gave me it. It’s soft and leathery and not too small, and it makes me smile, best of all.
