  1. Doctrine and Covenants 43-45 Doctrine and Covenants 43-45

  2. Section 43-45 It’s 1831 – and there is Wild speculation on the 2nd Coming

  3. Hubble • In February 1831 a womanarrived in Kirtlandcalled ‘Hubble.’ • She professed to be a prophetess of the Lord and to have received many revelations. • She said that she knew the Book of Mormon was true and that she should become a teacher in the Church of Christ. • She was very sanctimonious and deceived some. However, others had the spirit of discernment and her follies were made manifest. • She thought she knew more than the Prophet which caused many members to be bewildered by her different claims. History of the Church, 1:154

  4. What’sWrong? • What’s wrong with this situation? • What the Lord says this time: D&C 43:3-7

  5. The Nature of God D&C 45:2-5 Picture this scene…

  6. Imagine that you had been asked to serve as the defense attorney for a man who had been arrested for murder… You stand and speak with much confidence, ‘Judge, jury, I demand that you set this man free!’ The judge answers: ‘On what grounds?’ You reply: ‘Because of my excellent reputation as an attorney, because of my marvelous record of service to the innocent.’ One can imagine how the judge and jury would respond - you would no doubt be laughed out of the courtroom. And yet, note how the Savior pleads our case, how he mediates between us and the Eternal Father. What a strange defense! What an unusual manner of defending us! The Lord pleads our cause on the basis of his merits; we are saved through his works, his mercy and his grace. And what does he require? ‘Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life.’ (Robert L. Millet, Steadfast and Immovable: Striving for Spiritual Maturity [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1992], 120.)

  10. Armageddon(Har Megiddo - Mountain of Megiddo) Revelation 9:16 16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand.

  11. Revelation 11:3,4,6 3 And I will give power unto my two witnesses...6These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will. Two Prophets

  12. Revelation 11:5,7 5 And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.7 And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. Two ProphetsWill Become Martyrs

  13. Revelation 11:8,9 8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.9 And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. 15. The Second Coming An invitation: Doctrine and Covenants 45:32 (&39) Complete this phrase: If we stand in holy places and watch for the signs, we will … How do you think a follower of Jesus Christ can “stand in holy places”? Where are some places in your life that you consider “holy places”?  “‘Holy places’ may have more to do with how one lives than where one lives. If we live worthy of the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, then we stand in a holy place. … A holy place is any place where a person enjoys the Spirit of God” (Doctrine and Covenants Student Manual, 2nd ed. [Church Educational System manual, 2001], 196).

  16. The Millennium

  17. The Millennium

  18. The Millennium Elder Bruce R. McConkie: “Children will be born, grow up, marry, advance to old age, and pass through the equivalent of death. Crops will be planted, harvested, and eaten; industries will be expanded, cities built, and education fostered; men will continue to care for their own needs, handle their own affairs, and enjoy the full endowment of agency. Dwelling in peace, living without disease, and progressing as the Holy Spirit will guide, the advancement and perfection of society during the millennium will exceed anything men have supposed or expected.” (Mormon Doctrine, pp. 496–97, as quoted in the Old Testament Institute Student Manual, Isaiah 65.)

  19. The Millennium Revelation 20:1-3 1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up 1 Nephi 22:26 26 And because of the righteousness of his people, Satan has no power; wherefore, he cannot be loosed for the space of many years; for he hath no power over the hearts of the people, for they dwell in righteousness, and the Holy One of Israel reigneth.

  20. “When Satan is bound in a single home‑‑ when Satan is bound in a single life‑‑‑the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life." (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, 172) The Millennium

  21. A new heaven and new earth Revelation 21:1-4And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. The tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. The Millennium

  22. A new heaven and new earth Revelation 22:1-5And there shall be no more curse: and they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever. The Millennium

  23. The Millennium • A thousand years without wickedness (see Moses 7:64–65; Isaiah 14:7). • Not everyone will have a knowledge of the gospel and belong to His Church when the Millennium begins (see Micah 4:5). • The earth will be transfigured and receive its paradisiacal glory (see D&C 63:20–21; Articles of Faith 1:10; Isaiah 65:17; 2 Peter 3:10–14). • The violence of both man and beast will cease during the Millennium (see D&C 101:26; Isaiah 2:4; 11:6–9; 65:25). • Children will grow up and live upon the earth until they are one hundred years old (see Isaiah 65:20; D&C 101:29–31;63:50–51; 45:58). • The Lord will “turn to the people a pure language” (Zephaniah 3:9). • All questions will be answered (Isaiah 65:20-24)

  24. The Millennium • Resurrection of the Terrestrial (D&C 45:45-48; 88:89, Mosiah 26:25-27) • Resurrection of the Telestial (D&C 29:26-29; 88:100-102) • Resurrection for those mortals going to Outer Darkness (Alma 12:17-18) • The devil will be loosed for a short time after the Millennium (see Revelation 20:7–8;D&C 88:110–11; 43:31). • A final war between Michael the devil and his followers (see D&C 88:112–15; Revelation 20:7–10).
