the eskimo paradox
The Eskimo paradox
  • Studies show Greenland Eskimos eat a high fat, high cholesterol diet somewhat similar to the Danes.
    • Yet some how they have much better cardiovascular health. (Lancet 2:433-435,1979 and Am J Clin Nutr 33:2657-2661, 1980)
  • It is believed the high degree of Omega 3’s in their diet plays an important role.*

  • Many follow-up studies using both epidemiology studies and diet controlled studies followed.
    • Most showed a diet with as few as 1-2 fish (fatty type) meals a week had a significant reduction in the risk of cardiovascular health problems.(Am J Clin Nutr 65:1083-1086, 1997)
